(Katherine) Harris pitches sales tax idea

WASHINGTON -- Rep. Katherine Harris proposed a national sales tax during a campaign appearance Friday in front of the Internal Revenue Service, which she said she would abolish.

The appearance was mostly intended to continue her assault on Sen. Bill Nelson, the Democrat she is seeking to unseat in November.

"The people of Florida need to know that Bill Nelson has raised their taxes time and time again," she said.

Harris said that as senator she would make tax reform her top priority and argued to scrap the current tax system, and thus the IRS, for a national sales tax. Florida is one of a handful of states that rely on sales taxes instead of income taxes.

"No more income taxes," she said. "No more death taxes. Just taxes on what you spend."

Harris, however, would not use the term "sales tax," preferring the term "fair tax," which she said she would travel the state to promote next week.

Critics of the national sales tax argue it would amount to a big tax hike for low- and moderate-income taxpayers, who pay less tax than higher income taxpayers under the current system. A 2004 analysis by the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy of the leading sales tax legislation at the time estimated that at least 80 percent of earners would see their taxes increase.

In Florida, according to the analysis, taxes would have risen for 95 percent of taxpayers in 2005 if the sales tax were set at a rate sufficient for the government to break even. The lowest 60 percent would have paid about $4,100 more on average, and the highest 1 percent of earners would have paid an average of almost $255,000 less in taxes.

Katherine Harris is right in promoting the Fair Tax. It should resonate in a state with no state income tax. And remind Floridians Bill Nelson is a tax and spend liberal.

a national sales tax is a REALLY BAD idea! UNLESS you abolish the 17th Amendment.

Congress can repeal the income tax code today. The 17th Amendment gave Congress the power to institute an income tax.

The proposed legislation would do that simultaneously. I don't think the State Legislatures would have a problem passing it........

Bill Nelson is a tax and spend liberal.

He also looks way too much like "Beavis":

Nelson, especially when he is speaking, has eyebrows that appear to be trying to escape into his hair-line making it look like he is always "surprised".

That makes sense because everything seems to come as a surprise to him.

Old southern expression: "You've heard of people who don't know anything....this guy doesn't even suspect anything".

Instead attacking her as a "can't win candidate" like many FReepers and other republicans have done in the last year or so, we should be looking for more candidates as bold and as "conservative" as Katherine Harris. Katherine is a hell of a lot better than Bill Nelson or any democrat or our RINOs or even our cmplacent and "appeasement and/or compromise" republicans in congress.

She represents our real republican and conservative values.

Go Katherine!

I live in Florida. In order for the 17th Amendment to be repealed, it has to be submitted to the States' Legislatures for approval. When 36 of then do, it is toast!........that's what I was talking about!........

I think replacing the income tax with a national retail sales tax is a great idea. It's easier to collect, it imposes a burden only on retailers rather than all wage earners, and the burden is minimal. Just multipy gross receipts by the tax percent, and that's the tax.

An important consequence of the NRST is that the government no longer has any "need" to know the details of your business or your income. It doesn't matter what you pay your employees, or whether you amortize capital investment on one schedule or another, or anything of the sort. The tax is the same regardless.

Instead of writing off her candidacy, the party should be doing everything it can to remake FL into the second Texas.

Think of the money it will save and the loopholes that will be eliminated. It's extremely fair, everyone is taxed on their ability to spend.

remake FL into the second Texas.

That would be a huge step backward.

I have lived in both and speak from experience.

except for the fact that not one single entitlement program will go away, and one huge one will be created.

You mean the 16th Amendment?

I don't see how Congresswoman Harris' suggestion affects electing members of the Senate by direct vote.

One of the nice things about Harris being so far behind in the polls is that she can't afford to run a "safe" campaign. She is having to talk about issues that have a chance of "catching fire" with her constituents. She is proposing some bold conservative ideas. I love that. It's just too bad that these ideas couldn't come from a more electable source. Still, I hope that some of her conservative ideas catch the imagination of the people.

Why would it be a step backwards to end the Democrats grip on the last statewide federal office in FL? The Democrats don't have a deep bench in both states.
