WASHINGTON - Rep. Mark Foley, R-Fla., submitted a letter of resignation from Congress on Friday in the wake of questions about e-mails he wrote a former male page, according to a congressional official.

Foley, 52, had been considered a shoo-in for re-election until the e-mails surfaced in recent days.

Campaign aides had previously acknowledged that the Republican congressman e-mailed the former Capitol page five times, but had said there was nothing inappropriate about the exchange. The page was 16 at the time of the e-mail correspondence.

Foley's election opponent, Democrat Tim Mahoney, has called for an investigation.

Does this also mean a special election on Nov 7 to fill the remainder of his term, along with the election for the next Congress?

Time for Jeb Bush o pull a McGreevy. Since he's not up for re-election he can appoint himself to fill out the term. Then he can run for the seat as a write in and the Dims'll be skunked!

He should have just switched parties...the Dems would then be singing his praises...

Well, whatever this represents, it seems to be spreading.

Good riddance to Mr. Foley.

Any chance another Republican can step in and give the Democrat a fight?

I suppose he'll now go on a McGreevey sob tour.

A bottle of pills usually does the trick.

Any more pathetic closet cases want to quit while we're at it?

16 year old boy? He should be horse whipped. Twice, once for the boy and once for screwing us out of a seat. I despise cretins like this..he smears the whole party by his actions.

Difference between republicans and democrats:

Nixon, under threat of impeachment, resigns to keep the country out of the social/cultural fallout of the impeachment of a president.

Clinton, stays the course, gets impeached and dares them to throw him out.

Foley, as soon as the evidence becomes apparent, quits race and resigns.

Franks, well we know all about it...

Republicans are held to a different standard and, by in large, hold themselves to a higher standard. We just sort of expect this sort of stuff from democrats.

Two cardinal rules of politics:

1. Don't get caught with dead girl and

2. Don't get caught with a live boy.

The exceptions being that Democratic Congressmen can get cught with dead girls (Kennedy) and live boys (Barney Fag) all they want.
