From George Washington's Farewell Address:
"I have already intimated to you the danger of parties in the State, with particular reference to the founding of them on geographical discriminations. Let me now take a more comprehensive view, and warn you in the most solemn manner against the baneful effects of the spirit of party generally.
This spirit, unfortunately, is inseparable from our nature, having its root in the strongest passions of the human mind. It exists under different shapes in all governments, more or less stifled, controlled, or repressed; but, in those of the popular form, it is seen in its greatest rankness, and is truly their worst enemy.

Sometimes I wish I had been alive back then. I can't imagine the feeling of freedom they experienced and the brainstorming of birthing a new county founded on such magnificently holy principles.
It must have been a rush. Such great men, they would just laugh and scoff at most of the current caretakers.

why should it be any different today? there were enemies of liberty then (within and without), there are enemies of liberty now(within and without).
All that's changed is tactics.

I agree, and our standard of living is unreal.
But can you imagine what it would have been like to be a founder in the original colonies? Did they even know how far west the land went? They were completely free to change the course of history. In the face of death they waxed philosophic about man's true nature and God. The brewed their own booze and lived free. There were no seat belt laws. Simple taxes. A life completely understood I imagine.
Have you ever read how letters were written then? Amazing.
