Bolivian opposition raises doubts over military accord with Venezuela

LA PAZ, Bolivia A vaguely worded military pact between President Evo Morales' government and Venezuela ran into resistance Thursday in the opposition-controlled Senate.

The accord, presented May 26 during a visit by President Hugo Chavez of Venezuela, would bring armed forces under the two leftist administrations closer together and have Venezuela help Bolivia construct a military base in the northern city of Riberalta and a river port on its border with Brazil.

"Disarm who? Control of what forces? It could mean anything — whatever you want is in there," Carlos Borth, senator from the conservative opposition party Podemos, told the Associated Press on Thursday.

The pact was "expressly designed to provide (Venezuela) cover for eventual future actions," he said. "And with Chavez, one never knows."

Good news, sounds like some Bolivians are not too anxious to cozy up to Hugo.

Chavez could shoot off his mouth and throw money around when oil was at 75 a barrel, but oils heading lower and citgo is being kicked to the curb by the US.

Everyone with half a brain in his head knows Chavez is going to bankrupt his country and then most like a coup will take place and he'll be running to cuba with his tail between his legs.

You've got a point about bankrupting the country. He's been throwing money around like a drunken sailor and if oil prices drop a little more and stay there he'll be hurting.

Chávez's last plan is to change the name of the currency from Bolivars to Bolivianos. Right now, the black market exchange rate for the Bolivar is 2,755 and rising. Here is the catch. Once the change takes effect, when you go to the Central Bank to change your Bolivars to Bolivianos there will be a limit of Bolivares 5 million per person. At today's rate that is USD 1,814. Anything above that amount, Chávez gets to keep. The idea is to make slaves of Venezuelans while he and his followers increase their wealth. The biggest problem is that the mayority of Venezuelans want him out and are still naïve enough to think that they will be able to vote him out in December when his Electoral College will do everything to switch things around at the last moment.

Thank you for this interesting info, it is sad that in this day and age there are still despicable people like Chavez taking advantage of their countrymen for their own inflated egos. Hopefully a Venezuelan patriot will end his reign soon.

Ozzie Guillen is another of Chavez's followers. What I don't understand is why he accepted US citizenship. He should come back to Venezuela or to Cuba.
