Mayor Daley is not reserving a seat on the Barack Obama bandwagon alongside television talk show diva Oprah Winfrey and actress Halle Berry.
But if the freshman senator with the rock star appeal wants to run for president in 2008, Chicago's most powerful Democrat sees no problem with it.
"Everybody wants him. If he wants to run, he should run. I mean, why not?" Daley said Wednesday.
Pressed on whether Obama was seasoned enough to make the race, the mayor said, "Well, you know, if people want to run, they're going to run. I mean, you're not going to stop anyone who basically has the passion and commitment. If they want to do it, they want to do it. There's nothing wrong with that.
"This is what America's all about," Daley said.
Halle Berry's a fan This week television talk show host Larry King asked Winfrey about a Kansas City man who is trying to promote her for president. "Take your energy and put it in Barack Obama. That's what I would say," she said. When King asked whether Obama was her choice, she replied, "That would be my favorite guy."
State Comptroller Dan Hynes, who was swamped by Obama in the 2004 Democratic primary, called a news conference this month to say the nation hungers for Obama's leadership.
Berry told the Philadelphia Daily News that she's so in love with what Obama stands for, she would be willing to "collect paper cups off the ground to make his pathway clear."
Obama has said again and again that he has no plans to run for president. But that didn't stop him from delivering the keynote speech at Sen. Tom Harkin's Iowa steak fry before a crowd of 3,500 adoring, autograph-seeking fans. Harkin introduced Obama as a "political rock star."
Obama will be Hillary's running mate. She'll promise him a shot at the presidency after she has her two terms.
I don't get it. Is his appeal that he is black and can pronounce "ask"? Is there any piece of legislation that he has accomplished in his 2 years in the Senate?
He has no experience, no class, no integrity, and he is a marxist... that is why he should NOT run!
LLS
As far as I can tell, he has done absolutely nothing for the state of Illinois but the people don't care. He has been elevated to the favored speaker at every Democratic event around the country. He is very smart. He was on the Law Review at Harvard.
Um, ok but I would warn you not to overestimate his appeal. You see because the problem he has is a little something called overexposure.
After winning his senate election (before he was even a senator) newsweak made them his "man of the year" say what?
I think people generally don't really like politicians that are hyped up that much.
Who would run against the CLinton/Obama ticket?
He has zip, zero, nada experience.
These serious times call for serious candidates.
NO senators - governors or former governors only, please.
Article reads like an echo chamber of liberal bed-wetters.
I could write a couple of thousand words detailing how stupid OpRAH, Halle and Larry King are. And for the record, Halle Berry looks like a little boy with little bumps on her chest.
Proof that women in general are too emotional to have the right to vote.
I agree. Please rat run some guy with a moslem name. Please do it rat, please.
I'm with you. I don't get this guy's appeal either. I think it is because some women think he's attractive. Well, attractive doesn't mean effective or qualified and I'm tired of people using shallow standards to foist unqualified people onto the electorate.
He should run, and he should be the nominee. And he should lose.
But what does he stand for? Marxism? I guess people either don't know that, don't care, or are okay with it. Shows you how low politics has sunk in this country. Time was we looked for leadership, experience, courage, integrity, accomplishment. Now all the credentials seem to be are media-driven hype, pretty face, and a minority group-identity appeal.
I have no idea who would run against them, but Hillary is scared to death of Obama, rightfully so. The guy reminds me of a combination of Marjoe and Bill Clinton, with his ability to take on the characteristics of any group that he is speaking to. He's a Muslim, who also attended Catholic schools for a period, so he can speak to Black audiences like revival preacher. And worst of all, they fall for it. I don't think that the country is ready for a Muslim VP.
Or Obama's wife!!!!
quick: someone name his top 10 accomplishments in public life.......... hello? hello? he seemed like a nice guy until he did a "Hillary" on grabbing multi millions on a book deal minutes before signing a Senate ethics pledge. ick.
I agree that Obama could get the presidential nomination because Democrats need to be liberal to win the primaries. According to www.vote-smart.org, these are his latest ratings, from some famous interest groups: NARAL, 100%; NAACP, 100%; NEA, 100%; NOW, 100%; AFL-CIO, 92%; Americans for Democratic Action, 100%; National Taxpayers Union, 0%; U.S. Chamber of Commerce, 33%; American Conservtive Union, 8%; and Gun Owners of America, 0%. If he wins the nomination, he would be too liberal for the majority of American voters.
