Cardinal Mahoney's Unspoken Agenda on Illegal Immigration
Human Events Online ^ | Sep 27, 2006 | Jim Gilchrist and Jerome R. Corsi

Earlier this month, a scant 400 people marched in the Los Angeles Labor Day demonstration in support of illegal immigrants, a dramatic decline compared to the 400,000 who attempted to bring downtown Los Angeles to a halt in May. Still, this didn’t keep Cardinal Roger Mahoney from joining in and proclaiming to tell parishioners at the opulent Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in downtown Los Angeles that “without this immigrant population, this state would be bankrupt.”

To the contrary, Mahoney has it backwards. Unless this illegal immigrant invasion is stopped right now, the state of California is certain to go bankrupt, and soon.

While writing our new book, “Minutemen: The Battle to Secure America’s Borders,” we attempted to interview Mahoney. Sadly he refused our request. We were able to speak with Kevin Appleby, director of migration and refugee policy for the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops in Washington, D.C. Mr. Appleby asserted to us that the church’s solution is “different from the Minutemen’s solution,” which he characterized as “to build a wall and seal the border.” Instead, Appleby argued in support of a “guest worker program,” which he refused to categorize as an amnesty.

When pressed, Appleby shifted ground, arguing that the United States has a “moral obligation” not to its own citizens, but to open our borders to Mexicans who want to live and work here. “With the U.S. being the greatest economic power in the world,” he explained to us, “we would have some obligation to help Mexico solve their problem of poverty.” He then insisted that legalizing Mexican here illegally would allow the church to make sure they are hired at or above minimum wage, with benefits.

Cardinal Mahony is functioning in the same manner as Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton.

Mahony has total contempt for the USA.

Why doesn't Cardinal Mahony go to Venezuela with Hugo Chavez?

From the Catechism of the Catholic Church. One which Mahony does not follow. This is what's relevent to this thread topic:

2241 The more prosperous nations are obliged, to the extent they are able, to welcome the foreigner in search of the security and the means of livelihood which he cannot find in his country of origin. Public authorities should see to it that the natural right is respected that places a guest under the protection of those who receive him.

Political authorities, for the sake of the common good for which they are responsible, may make the exercise of the right to immigrate subject to various juridical conditions, especially with regard to the immigrants' duties toward their country of adoption. Immigrants are obliged to respect with gratitude the material and spiritual heritage of the country that receives them, to obey its laws and to assist in carrying civic burdens.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church.

Ok, I will be very sincere here, just one questions: IF the Catholics - the actual people who observe the rules, confess and take communion, (the good ones! :) - would have been more indignant... if they would have raised their voices in outrage to the abuses of the.. whatever... don't you think that the high officers (Cardinals, bishops, whatever) of the church would responded in a more transparent fashion?

I mean, just on the issue of abortion... why would a GOOD Catholic vote for a Democrat? If Catholics were sincere.. they should have moved to the right a long time ago.. including the bishops. If they had, then, perhaps, I would me more inclined to listen to their voices on the Immigration.. perhaps.

As I see it, the CC is just "lying low" for now, hoping we all forget the abuses etc... well, i WILL NOT FORGET IT. Ok, I am done for the day. Have to work :)

Thanks for the post, the reference & the link.

As you probably know, I differ with Cardinal Mahoney on this issue.

And I will email him your reference.

Semper Fi,
Kelly

We all, as Catholics, non Catholics, whomever...strongly differ with Mahony with his stance on immigration (and I'll not bring the other issues in here). What he is doing is distorting the teachings of the Catholic Church (let alone, our laws...that's why I sited this link). He is crossing the line.

He is fully aware of that paragraph I linked here. If he, or one of his "spokespersons" gives you the time of day and spin some type of response to you, please post it.

We all could use a laugh. And then, it will also illustrate what else L.A. has to fight against.

All the best to you,

I'm Catholic but Mahoney has single handedly turned me off to the church I have been with for more than 50 years. I hope enough people protest the Cardinal so Rome will muzzle him. Transfer him to Mexico. The bottom line is, follow the $$$.

You're painting with an awfully broad brush, there, ElPatriota. There are liberal Catholics and conservative Catholics. Bye and large, conservative Catholics are those who actually darken the door, believe in Jesus Christ as their Savior and believe in the Church's teachings on the sanctity of human life. Overwhelmingly, they vote Republican. Count me among those.

Then there are the cultural Catholics, who use the Church only for baptisms, weddings and funerals, will tell pollsters they're Catholic, but aren't all that Christian and do not believe the Church's teachings. By and large, they vote Democrat.

You're right that the Church unfortunately lost a great deal of its moral authority over the pedophile priests scandal. There are complicated reasons, not excuses, but reasons why the scandal was not taken seriously for many years at the highest levels of Church. IMO, individual members of the church will be judged by God for their actions, and I wouldn't want to be them when it happens. As an aside, Pope Benedict seems to be taking positive steps to clean out the seminaries and lay down the law.

As for immigration, there is no "one Catholic voice" on the subject, just as there is no "one Protestant voice." By and large, conservative Catholics oppose illegal immigration and liberal Catholics do not. That is more a result of where they stand politically than where they sit on Sunday morning.

"if they would have raised their voices in outrage to the abuses?"

First, "if" is the biggest word in the dictionary.

The Church made an honest mistake originally in dealing with the priests who were abusing children.
The Church was told by psychologists that these priests could be treated, "cured." and transferred to other parishes. The psychologists and the Church were wrong.
And priests have since been removed and reparations to those who were abused made. Of course, we all know that no reparation can make up for the wrongs perpetrated on those children.

But if you think so little of the Catholic Church and Catholics that you believe we purposely allowed priests to abuse OUR OWN CHILDREN then I am sorry. You are just DEAD WRONG! Once the Catholic laity learned of the abuse and the failure of the priests' psychological treatment; the priests were removed and turned over to the authorities for criminal justice. Now if you want to continue to hijack this ILLEGAL ALIENS thread with your anti-Catholic posts; then do so without posting to me.

Now about ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION!

You don't know much about Catholics and the Church, do you? LOL

Maybe you should enlighten us kelly, as long as I've lived in the county Mahoney and the Catholic church have been knee deep in politics, illegal immigration, and 'rights' for those illegals - generally things that should not be allowed of any religious entity.

IIRC the church has had its role in radicalizing latin america as well...

Some of the comments have not been smears. Some have said the Cardinal is not a patriot or some such things. Some believe he is a traitor to his faith because of his position. You may not agree with them, but they are legitimate topics of discussion that don't need a special thread. Just because one is a man of the cloth does not give one immunity from criticism. Just my humble opinion, of course.

if "hitting a nerve" is being passionate about illegal immigration and my Cathoic faith then you are correct.

if you have a problem with that then that's your problem not mine...
you found your way here, you can find your way out. LMAO
