Gov. Schwarzenegger has three days left to decide whether to give a landmark tax victory to gay rights activists -- the right to file as married couples -- but stick them with a tax-filing headache.
The bill, which is among a stack of bills that will become law unless vetoed by Saturday, would require California's 75,000 registered domestic partners to file their state tax returns as if they were legally married -- even though they'd still have to submit single returns to Uncle Sam.

``This is hugely symbolic,'' said Jean Johnston, a tax attorney with Johnston/Childress in San Francisco. ``You're an economic unit. It's symbolic of that reality and that the state accepts that reality.''
Many partners would see their state tax bills drop, especially when one partner earns the bulk of the couple's money. But there would be a practical trade-off, experts say. Preparing their taxes and plotting out tax-saving strategies could become trickier than ever because the federal rules remain significantly different.

The bill, SB 1827, passed the Legislature in August after acrimonious debates that triggered shouting matches. At one point, Assemblyman Jay La Suer, R-La Mesa, called the measure ``part of the homosexual agenda.'' Assemblywoman Jackie Goldberg, D-Los Angeles, called his remarks offensive, saying he was ``castigating me and mine.''
The bill would require registered partners to file their California taxes as married couples, though they could choose between filing a joint return or filing separately. They'd no longer file as single or head-of-household taxpayers.
``This is the final piece -- and I'm proud of it,'' said state Sen. Carole Migden, D-S.F., a lesbian legislator who wrote the bill. ``It is a concept that has resonated with people and a fairness issue that the public supports.''

That's why we have to allow gay marriage.
It's one thing to join up with a friend to get a discout on taxes, there's no risk. But in a marriage, you are putting your 401(k), house, investments and on the line.
Or we can just get rid of the benefit for married couples.
I love your personal page!
Ummm....let's do the math...loud.....you live for 85 years and pay your taxes, and have no children.....let's say you pay, oh, $100K in taxes in 50 years of that time.....just for fun.
A "family" of a mom and dad, and two kids lives for, oh, say, 40 of your 80 years, and 3 of them pays, oh, let's say, $80K in taxes each....let's see, that's $240K in taxes, in 40 years....NOW....who's paying for what? And, just whom do you think will take care of , invent, and maintain all the stuff YOU like? You can't tell me you're going to build your own car, your own furniture, your own ...well, you get my picture.
I'm sure clever people will figure out how to abuse this. As is the case with many tax laws.
If you look at children as merely drains on the system, you'd be right.
But those families are raising your future fellow citizens, and it ain't cheap.
Or would you prefer to replace American procreation with Muslim immigration?
Nothing like a good old "tax victory." Especially if you're gay. This is earth-shattering news.
"I fail to see why people should pay fewer taxes because they are married or, more importantly, if they have children.
"
I agree. I don't think martial status should have anything to do with taxiation. The rates should be the same for everyone. It isn't the role of the government to promote or discourage marriage.
"Or would you prefer to replace American procreation with Muslim immigration?"
We are already replacing it with Mexican immigration. Go to just about any public elementary school in North Carolina. Damn near every kid in K-3 is named Jose or Miguel.
Neil Boortz has the right idea. With the fair tax you can plan on things without any surprises.
People who rent a property are going to see the Fair Tax added to the monthly rent. It's a taxable service. Get a hair cut...that's a taxable service too. Figuring out how to price meals at a restaurant should be fun too. Labor+materials+profit+"Fair Tax".
Frankly, I think the Winter Olympics will be hosted in hell before the Fair Tax has a chance of being enacted.
HA list.
I hate the word "resonates".
Thanks, cowgirl, for your efforts to inform people about the "gay" agenda in CA.
Don't hold your breath. Arnold will veto just enough leftist bills to receive the back slap of key conservatives for political expedience. Eventually, he'll sign them all into law. It's axiomatic that a liberal will take you to hell in a handbasket in an instant, but a moderate will get you there a little at a time.
You're welcome. Thanks for the 'thanks'! :-)
Good news today--he vetoed AB 606 and SB 1056, two bad ones. I'm still looking though the bills passed/vetoed today so I'm not sure if there is any more action. I haven't seen any articles yet, but I'm sure they will get posted.
