Federal prosecutors in New York are investigating whether Jeanine Pirro, the Republican candidate for state attorney general, and Bernard Kerik, the former New York City police commissioner, illegally taped conversations of Pirros husband last year to determine if he was having an affair.
At a hastily arranged news conference yesterday, called because of an imminent television report on the inquiry, Pirro conceded that she had her husband, Albert, followed in the summer of 2005. She said she had discussed bugging the familys boat with Kerik, an old friend who was then running his own security business. But Pirro, who was the district attorney of Westchester County at the time, said she never went through with the plan, and she insisted that she broke no laws.
Seething with anger, and choking up as she laid bare her marital problems, Pirro said that two federal agents approached her at her home late one recent night and revealed that the United States attorneys office for the Southern District of New York was investigating her surveillance discussions. They had been caught on tape by Bronx authorities who were conducting a separate investigation of Kerik.
With less than six weeks to go until the Nov. 7 election, Pirro said she was being hounded by authorities as part of a political witch hunt and smear campaign led by the same federal lawyer who helped convict Mr. Pirro of tax evasion in 2000. But the United States attorney for the Southern District, Michael Garcia, a Republican appointee, issued a statement denying that the inquiry was politically motivated.
Pirro said she would remain in the race against the Democratic nominee, Andrew Cuomo, although top Republican leaders appeared torn over her fate yesterday, and former Mayor Rudolph Giuliani canceled a fund-raiser for her next month.

What is Cumo worried about????
Rush Limbaugh's plane must not be landing in their jurisdiction any time soon.
Sounds like the whole New York City RINO establishment is falling apart.
Westchester is part of metropolitan New York City, so I would consider Pirro an NYC product for all intents and purposes.

If ya don't trust your spouse, just leave them.
people in glass houses want to divert any stones that may be thrown...
The whole state is a political disaster. The liberals are like a fungus, gradually taking over more and more of the Republican strongholds. Then you get candidates like this....
"...Bronx authorities who were conducting a separate investigation of Kerik."
whats up with THAT?
Pirro's a joke, I wouldn't vote for her for a spot on the village water board.
Considering the options, I'll vote straight line Republican.
This screwing around on your spouse must be the New York GOP thing-to-do; or else she's just worried about Giuliani's example.
There comes a point at which it's appropriate to say "I can't pursue a political campaign until my marital situation is in order. Let me straighten out this situation, get divorced, and then return to the spotlight with my private problems sorted out." But running for office amid such a mess is vain and foolish. Pirro's personal life with her "husband" is such a disaster that she makes herself a laughingstock and damages the party she presumes to represent. How could the GOP have put her name forward in this election, knowing what a messy private life she has?
Then you know nothing about New York. NYC and the suburbs are two totally different political paradigms. Both happen to be rat-controlled, at the moment, but that doesn't mean they're anything remotely close to tthe same.
"this is a New York State GOP problem.
We sure can pick 'em, can't we?"
Agreed, but people seem to be able to turn their heads with the Clinton's marital problems.
Welcome to NY politics.
