Please pray on this day, and every day, for our Patriot Armed Forces standing in harm's way around the world in defense of our liberty, and for the families awaiting their safe return.
Good thread. Some of the responders should watch MythBusters though.
Thanks for the ping.
Lots of foolish people around amok these days.....I don't care if they torch themselves, but do it in private and let the rest of us fill up safely.
Now for anyone wondering how JJ finished where he did Sunday after serving a drive through penalty at the end of the race for speeding on pit road......here's the answer.
that's better
Some don't have to run to be amok either. ;)
LOL... I see them almost every day.
Speaking of running amok...
I'm surprised at how many Kinky signs I see out there......although I must say he doesn't have much competition.
[I didn't know RCR sold a partial interest in the business] "Ain't your Daddy's Nascar any more"
Team Owners Seeking Well-heeled Partners
Other teams are exploring the strategy. Roush Racing is in discussions with Boston Red Sox owner John Henry's Fenway Sports Group that might involve as much as a 50% interest. The Boston Globe reported a deal could be worth more than $50 million to the five-car team.
An 80% stake in MB2 Motorsports was purchased in August by Bobby Ginn, and the Florida real estate developer plans to expand the team from two cars to four.
"The problem with being an owner is your risk is so high and the reward is so small, it gets a little lopsided sometimes," said Chip Ganassi, owner of Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates. "That's why guys look for partners to defray the risk. You have huge budgets, and your upside is not that much."
Evernham said the benefits were evident for Richard Childress, who sold partial equity in his team to Chartwell Investments three years ago. After a reorganization that increased its budget by millions, Richard Childress Racing has five wins and two cars in the Chase.
"Richard did it and made a huge investment and turned his place around," Evernham said. "A guy who's a sharp businessman like Jack (Roush) is doing it. I've got to be aligned with somebody of a lot higher financial stature than I am."
Evernham said Toyota's 2007 entry into Cup is driving up costs by creating bidding wars for engineers and crewmembers.
"It's caused salaries to double and triple," he said. "You were paying pit crewmembers $300 a week, now they get $1,500 a week.
"When you start to see the billionaires come into the sport, I don't think it's going to stop with Jack selling half his deal. These race teams are going to be owned by huge firms or people that are more professional sports-oriented team owners, the George Steinbrennners and Jerry Joneses."
Those types of tycoons interest Evernham, who has talked with investment firms about a minority stake in his team but didn't think they were the right fit.
"The ideal partner would be a guy who's a gazillionaire that wants to win, is competitive and loves racing like I do," he said. "There's got to be guys like that out there."
If he's elected governor, I think I'll move to Mexico.
Mexico starts just outside the city limits of Eureka on the left coast...
Well, you should have invited Fawnn too then :o)
LOL, we've been told we are already there.
Any word yet on the #8 having a new DEI engine for 'Dega?
I'm sure now that you've (done my job and) made tubebender feel sufficient guilt for not inviting me, he's overnighting me some of the chowder. I'll let you know how it is! ;)
Jr said the engine will be new. He is running #25 which was built in 04 and run at Daytona and Talladega before.
And now I say OH NO OH NO OH NO OH NO......
Wimmer and Morgan-McClure part ways, Todd Bodine in #4 at Talladega: #4-Morgan-McClure President, Larry McClure announced today the mutually agreed upon release of Scott Wimmer as their full-time driver for the remainder of the 2006 season. Wimmer and McClure have agreed to part ways now, allowing the team to possibly utilize some veteran experience to diagnose the existing cars as well as try some potential drivers for 2007
[Bovine..do not wreck Jr]
Wimmer is going to KHI in the Busch series.
BTW Jr's take on the smoke issue.......
... your car filling up with smoke and you maybe needing a relief driver. Can you talk about exactly what that was?
Dale Earnhardt Jr.: We don't really know what the smoke was. I'd run about five or six laps in practice and the car was filling up with smoke inside. I thought that -- we had exhaust run out the right side, and I thought the rubber was getting in the crush panels and laying on the rocker, because the rocker was so hot, obviously, and in pretty much everybody's car it burns the paint on the other side -- on the interior of the car.
I was thinking it was just baking the rubber or whatever, the rubber debris that you pick up, we need to seal the crush panels up better. We sealed up the crush panels and we got it running in the race. There wasn't really anything consistent about it, but every 20 laps or whatever the car would fill up with smoke for some reason.
I couldn't really tell you whether it was oil or a fluid or rubber or what. It didn't have a distinct smell like it normally would, like rear-end grease or a tire rubbing. It didn't have kind of a distinct smell so I could really point it out. We also had a little bit of an oil leak on the lower pan. That might have been causing it.
But just depends what it was. Can't really find it. I mean, I was fine. I just wanted -- I didn't know if I'd be able to get Tony, Jr. the kind of warning to get silly or anything or get drunk in there smelling whatever I was smelling. I didn't know if I would be able to give him a warning, so I just told him to have somebody ready in case he saw me go down in the corner and go straight.
Q.: This is a loopy question. I was wondering if you have any childhood memories of hearing that Talladega was kind of a haunted racetrack or possessed, or, you know, had demons with it? If so, what did you make of that as a kid or now, if anything?
Dale Earnhardt Jr.: Well, I heard the story. When I was probably, I don't know -- I was racing late models in the mid '90s, I heard the story that Bobby Isaac heard voices. Leading the field, come in and parked it with ten to go or whatever when he was driving Bud Moore's car.
You know, I believe it. I belive Bobby Isaac comes in with the lead with 10 to go and tells you he heard voices, you better believe it.
You know, I don't know. I definitely have a lot of respect for the racetrack. If what they say is true, you know, it would be kind of freaky. I've heard that story a long time ago, and I heard that the airport previous to the track was built on an ancient Indian burial ground. I don't know if that's true or not, but that would be quite a twist. I don't know why they haven't used that in their advertisement.
Q.: Apparently it hadn't really stopped you from doing well there.
Dale Earnhardt Jr.: Well, I mean, you know, maybe the spirits like me. I don't know (laughter).
Just asked a friend about this and will post her answer. She's a long time race fan and lives fairly close.
leaving the clean-up duties to his hapless flack (while he laughed his ass off).
