Steamy sex? Dream on, liberals
By Chris Lackner
OTTAWA * If youve recently dreamed about sex with a stranger, flying or the dead coming back to life, chances are youre probably a liberal rather than a conservative.
A dream researcher from John F. Kennedy University near San Francisco has discovered fundamental differences between the dream worlds of people who identify themselves as ideologically left- or right-wing.
Among his findings, Kelly Bulkeley discovered liberals are more restless sleepers and have a higher number of bizarre, surreal dreams, including fantasy settings and a wide variety of sexual encounters.
Conservatives dreams were, on average, far more mundane and focused on realistic people, situations and settings: Conservatives seem to have more of a focus on the here and now and the material world, whereas liberals, in contrast, seem to have a wider sphere of imaginative activity. They dont just dream about what is, but about they wish could be.
Mr. Bulkeleys research will appear in an upcoming issue of Dreams, a journal published by he American Psychological Association.
Of the 134 liberals who took part in the study, 91% said they recently dreamed about sex; only 76% of 100 conservative subjects admitted the same.
But Mr. Bulkeley said the two political stripes showed very different tastes I dream partners.
Liberals were far more likely to have sexual dreams about strangers and a variety of partners and liberal women showed a greater tendency toward same-sex fantasies than their conservative counterparts (24% versus. 4%).
Especially for liberal women, there was a far greater variety in sexual partners and incidents of homosexuality, Mr. Bulkeley said. Liberals tended to show a greater willingness tp experiment with different things.
Conservatives were far more likely to report having sexual dreams about their spouse or current partner.
While left-wingers might be more adventurous in the subconscious bedroom, theyre also more likely to wake up in a cold sweat.
Liberals showed slightly higher levels of nightmares than conservatives.
The study includes some dreams recounted by liberals.
Among them was a nightmare: I was at a presidential rally where George W. Bush was speaking. There was so much red, white and blue.
Bush speaks: There are those who say that we are giving up our civil liberties. But I say, we should be proud to sacrifice our freedoms for America! The crowd went wild, cheering and waving flags. I woke up in a cold sweat.
Not surprisingly, conservatives had much more benign dreams about the U.S. leader: I was friends with George W. Bush, and we were working together on his ranch. I was happy to be there is typical.
While some of my colleagues think my research reinforces the stereotype of repressed uptight conservatives, it also shows that many liberals may be hanging on the edge of mental well-being, Mr. Bulkeley said, There may be a lot of hidden distress and unpleasantness in the liberal mind.

Also, there's nothing more hideously boring than someone who goes into great detail about their dreams. It's one of my pet peeves. "So there I was, naked in a room filled with Dr Phil clones, then Oprah came in took my hand and flew away with me onlyIwasn'tflyingIwaseatingapeanutbuttersandwichanditwascrunchyZZZZzzzzzzzz......."
I suspect many, if not most liberal men dream of having sex with another man.
Nah... the mentally ill always thrash around in their sleep! ;-)
I really can't say I even remember more than one dream a year (at best)and it usually isn't anything noteworthy. I don't remember having a nightmare in decades. Granted, it is a rarity for me to get more than a few hours of sound sleep at a time. Guess I must just be one of those unfeeeling, out-of-touch-with-my-inner-self, unimaginative conservatives that are making the world so miserable for all the dreamer types. How can I sleep at night knowing that??
I've actually had non-sexual dreams about both Algore and Senator Russ Feingold. In both, I was arguing Global Warming with them, LOL!
When things like that start happening, I know it's time for me to take a "Media Break." ;)
I also dream about zombies (dawn of the dead kind) and robots. I've been an "out" conservative since 1996, but have really been one all my life... and don't even get me started on the sex...
So, when we're unconscious we're making conscious choices, Mr. Bulkeley?
I knew a dude in college 13 years ago, he got a liberal girlfriend. She refused to have sex doggy style, because it was demeaning to women. She was a 50% you on top/50% me on top, for equality.
What a pathetic, sad person. If I had a woman like that, I'd think of other women too.
Of course, throw in the hairy legs, constant power struggles, masculine dress, and forget it.
Many liberal chicks don't even like to wear high heels!!
The left-wingers we have around here are usually polite enough- this being the South, you never know if the guy or gal you're addressing is hauling along a shootin' iron- but dang, they are an uptight and humo(u)rless bunch.
So many sacred cows, causes to uphold or fight, so many things they cannot mention lest the Gods of PC and Hate Speech be offended... give me The Vast Right Wing any time.
True story.
Too bad. I'm sure she would have been willing to help you clean your gun.
My Dad is fond of saying that "Being a Liberal means Always Having to say that You're Sorry."
Hmmm... Not a bad plot line.
Your Dad's an observant man- life's too daggone short to mince through it apologizing all the way. I'd rather laugh at things than cry, and there are too many ironies and absurdities not to make fun of them.
How's the... ahem..."medication" doing? :-)
Haven't needed it yet, but it's reassuring to have on hand-- again, thanks.
