SANTA YNEZ, Calif., September 26, 2006 - Southern California broadcasting pioneer Ralph Story has died.
The Emmy award winning reporter and anchor lost a long battle today with emphysema.
Story started in broadcasting in Buffalo in 1948 and went on to work at KNX radio in Los Angeles in the late 1940s.
He then moved to CBS's sister TV station in Los Angeles, KNXT, now KCBS-TV in the early 1960s.
Story was a part of "The Big News," one of the nation's first hour long local newscasts, working as the newscast's feature reporter.
The popularity of his segments led to a local show about the people and places of Los Angeles called "Ralph Story's Los Angeles," which aired for six years.
Story worked at KABC for several years in the 1970s before returning to Channel 2 where he finished his career.
He and his wife, Diana, had lived in Santa Barbara County's Santa Ynez Valley since the 1980s.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
Story was 86 years old.
SoCal ping
OH WOW I hear of this guy
Hey George Putnam still alive
George Putnam turned 92 on July 14.
Ralph Story signs off for the last time.
Condolences to the family.
I remember him quite well. The first time I saw him was when he was host of the $64,000 Challenge. And of course I remember him at KNXT/KCBS-TV.
Putnam is still kicking rump, and taking names.
W O W !!
One of the greats out here rip rs
Sorry. I forgot to ping you.
I grew up watching that show many, many times with my Dad, who was born and raised in LA. Between Ralph and my Dad I think I pretty much had LA history covered from 1927 to 1967.
RIP, Ralph.
I loved that show. We lived through a great era.
OHH Rack George
I do remember him on KIEV 870 before became KRLA LOL!
MAN that one dude I remember
You know what ES I notice something we have best broadcasters here in SO CAL like Vin Scully and Chick Hearns
RIP Ralph. Man sure glad Putnam is still alive. I heard a while back Stan Chambers is still around.
Most of those guys from early days TV are gone.
I was born in LA in 1947, lived in LA County until I left for grad school in 1970.
RIP
I enjoyed his reporting in the days when I watched television. Those days are gone.
RIP.
He struck me as a smart, fun guy and a real gentleman. May he rest in peace.
