Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has a commanding 17-point lead over Democratic rival Phil Angelides with just six weeks to go until the November 7 election, according to a just released Public Policy Institute of California poll.

Forty-eight percent of likely voters support the Republican governor, with just 31 percent saying they would vote for Angelides, who is currently the state treasurer.

Maybe they'll run more 'Arnold supported the President' commercials? One can only hope.

Arnold and Feinstein are cruising to victories with ineffective opponents.

Hope it isn't a lonely landslide. We need some other office holders, or it will be more of the same.

Unlike some here, I think Arnold is truly conservative at heart, but whenever he has tried to govern that way, he has really gotten burned, because the "true" conservatives still won't support anything he does, while the Dems and media become even more nasty. His only choice is to govern as a centrist - unless we pick up some seats in the legislature!

All Arnold has to do is keep his mouth shut and not do anything until election day and he will win in a landslide.

At best he's a "compassionate libertarian". The new majority kingmakers who promoted him are social liberals and economic conservatives. They have publicly said their goal was to diminish the role of conservatives in the CA GOP.

I'm trying to follow the logic.

1) The Austrian is a conservative ... at heart.
2) But when he tries to govern as a conservative he gets burned.
3) Conservative Republicans and Republican legislators won't support him.
4) When he acts like a conservative liberals get rough
5) Therefor, he must govern from the left until a Republican majority is elected to both houses of the legislature.

An interesting theory. Seems complicated.

Woudln't it be simpler to govern as a conservative and have the Republican minority in the legislture help?

With the help Republicans in the legislature, only legislation approved by Republicans could become law. No double digit budget increases. No doubling of debt. No exotic green legislation. No new taxes.

The new majority kingmakers who promoted him are social liberals and economic conservatives.

How do you define "economic conservative"?

From what I've seen the New Majority types favor big government and big spending, as long as someone else pays for it. They also favor leveraging the state through increased indebtedness. In my book, that ain't conservative at all.

California Conservatives! You don't have to take crap from the Governator any longer. Rid yourself of this Socialist Republican. On November 7, vote for down-the-ballot Republicans.

For Governor, vote for the only conservative in the race, Ed Noonan. He is the American Independent Party Candidate for Governor and 100% conservative and proud of it. For more information check out www.ednoonan4gov.org

Yes and help a REAL leftist socialist, Angelides get elected.

What brillian advice -- if you are a stealth Angelides supporter, or not so stealthy actually.

More than likely, the actions included in #2 were not conservative at all, else conservatives would support them.

Libertarian? You have it backwards: Schwarzenegger is an economic liberal and a social moderate. He's definitely more to the left fiscally, than he is socially.

A vote for Noonan is a vote for Angelides.

I don't like RINOLD but you gotta hold the nose on this.

Arnold took on the unions, Prop. 98 and spending in his reform propositions, and conservatives stayed home, didn't support them, and let the unions defeat them.

Hanniban is right.

Indeed, he needs to use a GOTV operation to help Tom McClintock, Chuck Poochigan, Claude Parrish, and Steve Poizner (all but Poizner conservatives) past the finish line.

No, FO. You and your moderate friends were the ones that were screaming for Prop 76 that included more borrowing and made sure that Prop 98 spending would NEVER go down. As to the unions, I fail to see how alienating the electorate by insulting teachers and unions, along with all of their family members was very "conservative", especially when the result of the initiative would have had little impact. They ran a completely inept campaign. Furthermore, some initiatives were funded by Democrats and Rinos--hardly looking to achieve any conservative objectives. In fact, the Redistricting measure was opposed by a majority of our Republican legislators. But keep spinning the leftist myth that "conservatives can't win." The leftists appreciate your efforts.

The minority in the leg can't do anything.

Arnold's power came from his popularity, and far too many conservatives didn't turn out in 2005.

His more liberal behavior as of late can be traced DIRECTLY back to his crushing defeat at the 2005 special election. It cut the heart out of his credibility, and took away his most powerful negociating tool: That he'd go to the people to do what the legislature wouldn't.

Unfortunately, he gave the people in this state to truly change the direction of the state, and failed.

He screwed up the timing. He should have done it in 2004 when he was still popular instead of 2005 when there wasn't anything else going on and he could be the focus of the $100mil the unions used to beat him.
