Sen. George Allen on Monday denounced as "ludicrously false" claims from a former college football teammate that he frequently used a racial slur to refer to black people.
Dr. Ken Shelton, now a radiologist in Hendersonville, N.C., also alleges that Allen, a former University of Virginia quarterback, once stuffed the severed head of a deer into a black household's oversized mail box.
In an Associated Press interview Monday, Allen vehemently denied the allegations Shelton made in an article published Sunday in the online magazine Salon.com and an AP interview Sunday night. His campaign released statements from four other ex-teammates defending Allen and rejecting Shelton's claims.
"The story and his comments and assertions in there are completely false," Allen said during an interview with AP reporters and editors. "I don't remember ever using that word and it is absolutely false that that was ever part of my vocabulary."
Questions about racial insensitivity have dogged the Republican throughout his re-election bid against Democrat Jim Webb. His use of the word "macaca" in referring to a Webb campaign volunteer of Indian descent in August prompted an outcry. The word denotes a genus of monkeys and, in some cultures, is considered an ethnic slur.
Shelton, a tight end and wide receiver for the Cavaliers in the early 1970s, said Allen used the N-word only around white teammates.
During a deer hunt with Allen in the early 1970s, Shelton said, Allen asked whether black families lived in the area before stuffing a female deer's head into the mail box of a black household.
"George insisted on taking the severed head, and I was a little shocked by that," Shelton said.
"This was just after the movie "The Godfather" came out with the severed horse's head in the bed," Shelton told the AP.
Doug Jones, who said he roomed with Shelton at Virginia, said in a statement that he never saw or heard anything from Allen that supports Shelton's claims.
"I never heard George Allen use any racially disparaging word nor did I ever witness or hear about him acting in a racially insensitive manner," Jones said.
Doesn't matter if he said it or not. He is a white male and is automatically guilty. Besides the media will treat it as a proven fact and keep repeating it over and over again in their coordinated attempt to destroy this man.
I would be more inclined to believe this story if Dr. Shelton admitted that he too was racist at the time. Birds of a feather and all.
Someone replied and pointed out it's a female deer and they don't have horns. Still, I have a hard time believing a deer's head could fit in a mail box.
The viciousness of their attacks against Alan shows who they truly fear.
"Get this: Dr. Ken Shelton donates to Democrats!"
Anyone know his wifes name? Sometimes they try to donate through their wives to hide it.
Deer Head In Mailbox
Several people in Hoke County got a surprise when they opened up their mailbox on Saturday. Deer parts were inside. One lady found a deer head, while others found hooves and legs. The Hoke County [NC] Sheriffs Department investigated and discovered that a local teen had committed the crime, thinking it would be a great prank. None of the families pressed charges however as the teen agreed to replace all the boxes and apologize.
Now they are plagarizing their smears?
Reminds me of "pubic hair on a Coke can."
Interesting. Good work.
Stop posting like a troll, unless you are a troll.
You mean the 500 year old democrat senator from W.VA?
It's Allen, not Alan.
Or really vulnerable. Either way, if he is to stay alive he has to pull off a great play to defang this offense. In football terms, he needs a sack or a turnover real bad about now.
Using the Clintonian Style Response, huh?
Well, maybe you are fast to buy the libeal media's pegging of Allen, Lott and the Pope as bigots who should spend the rest of their lives doing deeds and passing laws to compensate for their bigotry, but I dont. Neither should they.
I was considering Allen as a strong candidate in 2008. Now I'm looking at Newt.
I will not hold that against Allen because he said that when he was young and dumb. I did alot of dumb things when I was 19 too.
There was a long time before that when we , as a nation, were not so squeamish about ethnic stereotyping, and every ethnic group had some sort of quasi-derogatory nickname.
When I was in the Navy back in the '60s, people often got nicknamed by ethnicity, with no malicious intent intended. I've known plenty of guys called "Polack" or "Guinea", or "Wop" and things like that.
We called the black guys in the crew "the brothers", the black guys often referred to each other as "my niggah" (and so did we, as a sign of camaraderie).
The black guys who didn't especially care for white people called us "honkies", "whitey", and "blue-eyed devils". And you have to understand something. We did this to one anothers' face, and it was rarely provocation for a fight. We didn't sweat that kind of name calling any more than you got really upset at the things your brothers called you at home.
We understood that when you mix different groups of people together, ethnic differences and rivalries will occur. Remember, many of these men were from small towns and had never met so many people that weren't like them. But there was a big difference in how men handled their personal relations at that time.
There was no such thing as liberal "political correctness", and nobody had any particular qualms about this vaunted "N" word.
If you used it as a direct insult to another man, it was fighting words, we all understood that, and that rarely happened.
But since us enlisted guys were all at the bottom of the ship's hierachy, we all spoke openly about us being the "[substitute N word here, for the sake of gentle sensitivities] of the ship.
Perhaps that was because as part of the crew of a destroyer, we all considered ourselves as brothers. We really were like this big family group. And since there's nowhere to run on a destroyer when the sh*t hits the fan, you need to be able to rely on your brothers, all of them, because they might have to put their lives at risk if you get in a jam. And you have to be able to be assured that they will do that without a second thought.
But all this seems to indicate to me is that you are probably young guys and I'm an old fart.
It used to be that only people raised to be "ladies" or "gentlemen" didn't use that kind of language. I was raised to believe that "nigger" was an impolite word that nice people didn't use. My mother washed my mouth out with soap for that kind of language. But aside from that, it was in very common usage.
It wasn't until the tenured radicals from the '60s took over education that the word evolved from mere rough language to the status of mortal insult, something we have to describe with a letter only, so that the wrath of the Gods of PC don't descend on us with fire and brimstone.
But as a final piece of advice; if you don't talk like that, then it speaks well on your behalf. Judging people as a monolithic group entity is stupid, and a practice that just doesn't work when you deal with other people as individuals. And if you are smart enough to deal with others as individuals, you are already way of many of the generations that have come before you.
Sounds like I'm younger than you, but not by a whole lot. And I'm certainly not as young as you're thinking. I'm 51.
Then sir, I will presume, from what you have told me, that you were raised as a gentleman.
"Then sir, I will presume, from what you have told me, that you were raised as a gentleman."
I'd say that's probably right for the most part. And I hope I've done the same with my children.
Somebody is a bit unclear on the concept....
