Sen. George Allen on Monday denounced as "ludicrously false" claims from a former college football teammate that he frequently used a racial slur to refer to black people.
Dr. Ken Shelton, now a radiologist in Hendersonville, N.C., also alleges that Allen, a former University of Virginia quarterback, once stuffed the severed head of a deer into a black household's oversized mail box.
In an Associated Press interview Monday, Allen vehemently denied the allegations Shelton made in an article published Sunday in the online magazine Salon.com and an AP interview Sunday night. His campaign released statements from four other ex-teammates defending Allen and rejecting Shelton's claims.
"The story and his comments and assertions in there are completely false," Allen said during an interview with AP reporters and editors. "I don't remember ever using that word and it is absolutely false that that was ever part of my vocabulary."
Questions about racial insensitivity have dogged the Republican throughout his re-election bid against Democrat Jim Webb. His use of the word "macaca" in referring to a Webb campaign volunteer of Indian descent in August prompted an outcry. The word denotes a genus of monkeys and, in some cultures, is considered an ethnic slur.
Shelton, a tight end and wide receiver for the Cavaliers in the early 1970s, said Allen used the N-word only around white teammates.
During a deer hunt with Allen in the early 1970s, Shelton said, Allen asked whether black families lived in the area before stuffing a female deer's head into the mail box of a black household.
"George insisted on taking the severed head, and I was a little shocked by that," Shelton said.
"This was just after the movie "The Godfather" came out with the severed horse's head in the bed," Shelton told the AP.
Doug Jones, who said he roomed with Shelton at Virginia, said in a statement that he never saw or heard anything from Allen that supports Shelton's claims.
"I never heard George Allen use any racially disparaging word nor did I ever witness or hear about him acting in a racially insensitive manner," Jones said.

Of the 8, 4 would be "rinos" or moderates and 4 would be conservatives.
I am confused, do Jews go around stuffing deer heads into mailboxes. Is that some kinda Jewish thing. Methinks the Webb campaign is running on empty. Look for more revelations concerning Allen's past, like he didn't like to eat spinach or some such. Wow, dems can really scrape bottom in the race baiting of an election.

In addition to supporting a Democrat through financial contributions, which Salon acknowledges, evidently Shelton didn't tell Salon of his role in starting Tobacco Free For Life.
Why that might matter is because Allen opponents have criticized the Senator for being friendly to the tobacco lobby. Senator Allen, (R-VA), has accepted a whopping $33,000 from tobacco political action committees in just the 2005-2006 election cycle. Thats more than any other member of congress has taken from the tobacco companies in the past year.

Our mission is to prevent and reduce underage tobacco use through education, awareness and community efforts on a "cost free" basis to the youth and community of Henderson County.
TFL started in 1996 by Dr. Ken Shelton of Hendersonville Radiological Consultants and is currently operating out of an office on the Pardee Hospital campus. Pardee Hospital Foundation acts as TFL's fiscal agent and provides TFL with 501c3 nonprofit status.

A female deer (a doe) doesn't have horns (antlers). And yes, a small one might fit in a rural mailbox.
This smacks of desperation on the Webb campaign's part. Next they'll be reporting that he didn't share with the other kids during play time at kindergarten.
Someone ought to test this Shelton guy and see if he can remember which home Allen supposedly did this to so the owners can be tracked down to determine if anything like that ever happened.
Hmm-m-m-m...., having been ignored by him in letters waiting for responses, I'm no Allen fan BUT I kind of doubt his use of the "N" word on the college gridiron. Allen was a pathetic q.b. for the Cavaliers and African-American teammates saved him (by SOMEHOW snagging his errant, wobbly passes) or he would have gone down as the WORST passer in school history! (Believe it or not, Ted Kennedy was a better player at Harvard than Allen was at U.Va.--as Kennedy even got an invite with the Green Bay Packers to tryout at linebacker).
Several observations here:
1. Boys will be boys.
2. Everyone has used the "N" word, people need to get over it.
3. It was a really crappy, small-minded trick, if it's true.
4. Boys grow up to regret some of the stupid stuff they did as kids. If this really happened, I bet Allen regretted it a long time ago.
You're right on all points, but I'd love to prove this Shelton guy a liar. I'm not content to just say "boys will be boys" when there is no clear consensus that Allen was really like this. When Shelton's roommate and others who knew Allen say they know nothing of Allen's alleged racial indiscretions, that to me raises the b.s. flag on Shelton's claims. It would be fun to slam them shut to show the left wing hatchet job being done on Allen.

I can't say that I've never used the word but I can't remember ever using it derogatorily to describe either a black individual or blacks as a group.
You never know what Allen did as a college student, but I have to say this accusation seems suspiciously of the "They can never prove it didn't happen" variety. A deer's head in a mailbox would not go unnoticed, it probably would result in a police report maybe even a newspaper article. I hope they didn't dig up an old report and then retro fit it to an accusation against Allen.
Why is this a story? Even if it is true, the Democrats have nothing basis to complain given their continued support of Robert Bird, a former member and recruiter for the KKK. Heck, Bird even used the "n"-word just last year. Please explain the difference, Dems.
Back in the early 1970's, I heard radical college students at my school, a small private liberal arts college, use the "n" word for fellow students who were obedient to campus authorities, immersed in their studies, and uninterested in radical causes. This was about the time that a book by Jerry Farber entitled The Student as a Nigger (Pocket Books, 1970), was in vogue among campus radicals. Farber, whose book had nothing to do with blacks, contended that colleges and universities were tools of the Establishment, and that their purpose was to dominate, repress, and exploit students while turning them into apathetic automatons.
Well, at least Allen wasn't active in the Ku Klux Klan--as was the distinguished solon from a neighboring state.
