Chris Wallace: "I felt as if a mountain was coming down in front of me. "

Following today's buzz generating conversation with Bill Clinton, Chris Wallace shared some of his post-interview thoughts with FishbowlDC:

I was delighted to get the chance to interview former President Clinton. This was the first one-on-one sitdown he's ever given "Fox News Sunday" during our 10 years on the air.

The groundrules were simple--15 minutes--to be divided evenly between questions about the Clinton Global Initiative and anything else I wanted to ask.

I intended to keep to the groundrules. In fact--I prepared 10 questions--5 on the CGI and 5 on other issues.

I began the interview with 2 questions about Mr. Clinton's commitment to humanitarian causes. His answers were cogent and good-humored.

Then--I asked him about his Administration's record in fighting terror--fully intending to come back to CGI later (as indeed I did).

I asked what I thought was a non-confrontational question about whether he could have done more to "connect the dots and really go after al Qaeda."

I was utterly surprised by the tidal wave of details--emotion--and political attacks that followed.

The President was clearly stung by any suggestion that he had not done everything he could to get bin Laden. He attacked right-wingers--accused me of a "conservative hit job"--and even spun a theory I still don't understand that somehow Fox was trying to cover up the fact that NewsCorp. chief Rupert Murdoch was supporting his Global Initiative. I still have no idea what set him off. Former President Clinton is a very big man. As he leaned forward--wagging his finger in my face--and then poking the notes I was holding--I felt as if a mountain was coming down in front of me.

The President said I had a smirk. Actually--it was sheer wonder at what I was witnessing.

I tried repeatedly to adhere to the ground rules--to move the President along--and back to the CGI. But he wanted to keep talking about his record fighting terror.

When it became clear he wanted to throw out the ground rules--then I just went with the flow of the interview.

Poor Chris Wallace...he does make me mad on his left leanings...but I could see how taken back he was. He did an excellent job with the interview, I thought.

All I could think of was Chris Wallace has one nasty father, and his father gives him NO respect whatsoever. I'm sure attacking him as toon did in that interview...was nothing new to him....he's had to put up with this type of treatment from his father most of his life, over the yrs he learned how to stand his ground very well...and did a great job with the likes of this lying scumbag.

This was planned on Clinton's part. He was just looking for the right opening that Chris Wallace was bound to give him. He staged this for an ulterior motive. Whether to deflect criticism on himself and his administration for not getting Bin Laden and/or to enhance his, and therefore by default, Hillary's position with the extreme leftists in his and her Party. They will all come running to his defense now, and be ecstatic that he let loose on those evil right-wingers. Mark my words, this was all a calculated plan.

clinton seemed to dominate the interview by using all the tactics a habitual liar uses by not letting any rebuttal, and getting louder, magnifying the faint praise of himself by others and then becoming almost threatening, leaning into his questioner, eyes squinting, face distorted, poking his finger, what a expose' of the real clinton.

Clinton is a leftist. Even if Bush is trying to rehabilitate him, Clinton is a leftist. Don't expect anything more from him.

this is classic white trash behavior they exhibit when they've been caught doing something wrong; especially when it's something they know they're guilty of.

You're right about it being classic. This type of behaviour is what put Springer on the map. Everything from "You are my baby'sdaddy, see I told you" to "But I cain't hep it. I want to be married to your momma, I want a divorce from you." The only difference is clinton didn't pick up a chair and throw it at Chris. Classic white trash in a suit and tie.

'The President said I had a smirk. Actually--it was sheer wonder at what I was witnessing.'

I would call that the WTF expression.

Mark my words, this was all a calculated plan.

I agree that they could "outdraw the devil," but I also know that, eventually, the sort of madness that these people have engaged in does manifest itself very undeniably and very publicly.

I didn't see the interview; I understand your analysis and I guess we'll just have to wait and see...

Seems like it's being spun to play "true to type," what with the tell-all afterwards by Wallace...you're right to be skeptical.

Smirky question - You have previously been accused of rape by Juanita Broadderick. How do you respond?

Another smirky question - Mr President, you just said that you TRIED to get bin Laden and FAILED! Do you consider that the biggest failure of your presidency? If not, what do you think that your biggest failure was?

Clinton's performance unintentially blew up the DNC's coordinated weekend hit on our President with the classified leaks to New York Times-Washington Post-CBS News.

The only thing people are talking about is Clinton's rage and instability in the interview with Wallac.

I don't think it was calculated at all. Clinton just can't help himself. He is a narcissist who is obsessed with himself and his image. He is totally pissed off that he can't be the "greatest ex-president ever" and have everyone kissing his ass over his Global Initiative, because we know he didn't do squat about al Qaeda when he could have and we are not going to forget it. It's the ball and chain he will carry forever. Over time, even his harshest critics will stop talking about Monica and he will live that down. But he'll never, ever, ever live down 9/11.

I guarantee you will see the same unscripted rage in the future whenever he is questioned about 9/11. He can't lie or pout his way out of it and this he simply cannot handle.

Great job Fox news and Chris Wallace, I know we conservatives dont like some of the Left trend at Foxnews but I would still support it over likes of the liberal idiots at CNN,NBC,CBS, ABC etc. As for Clinton, he did a good job of destroying his reputation and his legacy, after all this is one job he is surely capable of.
