After two years of digging and testing, Alternet.org contributing columnist Christopher Rabb discovered that there is more to a person's heritage than their ancestry.
In order to learn more about his black ancestors, Rabb and his family began a series of DNA tests, which unveiled several things he found troubling.
"I quickly realized that the more intently I sought to learn about my black ancestors, the more I would have to research the white people who owned them," he says. "A notable subset of the slave owners were also my ancestors."
Rabb discovered that some of his slave ancestors had been raped by their owners. While he always suspected this, testing and digging into his family's past confirmed it. It was not an easy fact to come to terms with.

Just imagine if someone grabbed your 15 year old daughter as a bedbuddy for some stranger. You don't think her mother or siblings would object? You her dad wouldn't object, because your owner would beat you to death if you did.
That was the reality of slavery, and it happened often.
"Us whites have to face up to the fact that racism will never end until we no longer exist to continue the practice and keep alive the memory of those before us who must never rest".
Mebbe, and mebbe not. Check out black-on-black hate crime some time.
The Communists and others of their ilk get waaay too much mileage out of keeping the masses at each other's throats over ancient grievances real and imagined. That way the rabble stays passionately occupied while the usurpation of power continues unabated.
Were it not for continuous rescussitation, racism might have died a natural death by now.
i often wondered how much of this abuse went on from the days of any girl going into ""service"" and working there at a young age, usually around 13 or 14.
Even if true, so what?
Sometimes digging into your family geneology isn't pretty. Those were different times. People did things to other people and skin color wasn't always the major factor playing into the abuse. It's just tough to tell that to modern day "intellectuals" with an agenda.
I don't know about that because it sounds too much like how I would think as a westerner. There are many cultures that consider female children to be worthless. They're either aborted or sold.
Yes. "Race" means "root," not "branch."
And some girls got into households where the master abused them, and some got the hots for one of the other servants or the master's son, or whatever and ended up having to leave service. If she was indentured, and just not an employee and got pregnant, she had to put in an extra year's service for the lost time, and might have to put her child up, and often got into legal trouble because the community didn't want to support an illegitamite child if they could find who the father was and get him to pay.
There are lots of records and diaries and stories about this.
He is descended from SLAVE-OWNERS!
Yeah, I imagine we'll always think of something to fight about.
Though there is no mistaking that I'm black as the day is long, I am proud to count myself among the Wilkinson, Stark and Biddle families; that would include General Wilkinson, who was one of the early governors of the Louisiana Territory, Col. John Stark, who served General George Washington with distinction, and the Biddle family of Philadelphia. Through research, I've also found that I am descended from a Confederate military general named Edwards, as well as a direct descendant of Chocktaw Indian chief Tuskaloosa.
Now, I don't know if this is the result of a violent act or otherwise, but at this stage, I'm happy to be who I am and certainly proud of my ancestors.
Not rain on your parade, but most of the soldiers on either did care much about slavery as the cause of the war. Heck, several northerners commented that they would have never joined up to fight to free the slaves. I have relatives on both sides of the conflict and considering that great majority of them never owned slave, they did not give a rat's ass about freeing the slaves. The institution would have died out as the industrial revolution was picking up steam and they were no longer cost effective.
"Huuh!
Am I supposed to tell my ash blonde, hazel eyed grandson that light skinned girls are off limits, and that he must confine future interests to black girls? Tellyawhat, you tell your grandson that, first.
Racism is not going to end, and it does not need to end, it just needs to be accepted as a done deal, all games to be conducted on a level field.
Just as soon as you run off on a mission to change human nature, you don't sound Republican any more"!
However, we are all descendants of slaves and enslavers, and, no doubt, of rapers and rape victims.
Slavery existed in Europe almost as long as it has in Africa and Asia. In the early part of the 20th century, European men, women, and children were sold in the Balkans. And then there was also the jus primae noctis (droit du seigneur).
The gentleman's enlaved ancestors were victims of rape, and so were the ancestors of his slave-owning ancestors.
They came back under Grant and then Sherman and obtained satisfaction.
Books are balanced in some accounts eh!
