Black Democrats pledge backing to Steele

BALTIMORE -- Prominent black Democrats yesterday bucked their party to support Lt. Gov. Michael S. Steele -- the Republican nominee in Maryland's U.S. Senate race. "Like so many people who have come out today, I'm sick and tired of being taken for granted by the Democratic Party," said William H. "Billy" Murphy Jr., a Baltimore civil rights lawyer who hosted the "Steele Democrats" event at the Eubie Blake National Jazz Institute and Cultural Center.

Hey, one step at a time -- or "a journey of 1000 miles begins with a single step"! If they vote now for a black Republican because he is black, that is a great first step toward the day when they vote for the best man irrespective of his color.

I want to believe this is sincere, but the groupthink of democrat blacks in general to date leaves me with a distaste. Are they picking color over party, or substance over party? In my opinion future Senator Steele is hands-down the better candidate, but for a democrat to recognize that... well, I am just stretched into the realm of disbelief.
