U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan on Thursday was trying to settle a flap over a potentially damaging claim made earlier in the day by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
Ahmadinejad said Annan had told him Iran could ignore a Security Council resolution requiring the country to cease enriching uranium by Aug. 31 or face economic sanctions. The Security Council sought the resolution in the face of rising fears over Iran's possible moves toward building nuclear weapons: Uranium enrichment is one of the key factors in that process.
But in its most recent report, the United Nations nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency, found that Iran had continued enriching uranium through the deadline, bypassing Security Council Resolution 1696.
"We didn't understand and couldn't understand why a resolution was passed in the midst of an examination of a package," Ahmadinejad said. "We think [the Security Council] was probably under pressure by some powers who constantly want to place pressure on countries. The secretary-general told me to disregard what has happened for the time being, resort to diplomacy."

HAH! Several of us posted about this statement yesterday when we were on the live thread- could not believe our ears! It's really good to see at least someone in the media followed up and is bringing attention to it..the duplicity at the UN is frightening.
Surely Olberman will have this as # 5 on his countdown tonight? LOL:)
Deport the U.N. and Annan with it.
The sad part is that one doesn't know exactly which party lied. Both of the them are confirmed liars.

Trust Kofi?
Here's what Iran's Ahmadinejad said about the UN resolution:
"In all the contacts I have had with Mr. Annan he assured me that this resolution was issued hastily, and that we should continue our work without considering it. We did this, while we could have placed this proposal aside. We could have said that we were not prepared to do anything more until they had proven their honesty to us," he commented.

I was going to post this when I first saw this thread...but I don't have any "source" information bookmarked...but, I will say it anyway.
Back at the time that the "ceasefire" first started between Israel and Lebanon, there was a trip that Annan took to that area...and it was mentioned SOMEWHERE that I read, that one of Annan's reasons for going over there was to tell Ahmanutjob not to worry about the "deadline".
I remember thinking at the time that it is weird that no more was made of this in the media...but, I forgot it until I saw this....so, I believe it...I believe that Annan did tell Nutjob not to worry.
Sorry, I can't source it right now...without LOTS of time to look around...but I just thought I would post what I remember anyway.
Did you see #64?
LOL..DUH...I think I need to start reading more...before posting.
Thanks..
Disregard what either say and think and act in your own best interest.
I agree. Koffee Kup is probably the liar here.
On a side note:
Ahmadnutjob: "We think [the Security Council] was probably under pressure by some powers who constantly want to place pressure on countries."
That's a shot at the US.
Who to believe?
Quite the quandry, isn't it?
It really is --- I am just discussing this with the doc right now.
He believes the Iranian --- he sees Kofi telling him "tone down your rhetoroic, but don't worry of the security council." Even if they pass a resolution, it won't be enforced.
BINGO!
Kofi knows these people well- and knows full well the word "enforcement" is not one they spend time pondering over in Turtle Bay. The UN does one thing well: meaningless rhetoric.
The UN has been even more of freak show than usual this year.
I bet Kofi is lying. His son is probably over there making some money on the deal
Double-Dog-Dittos to that! Both Kofi and his son are known liars and thieves, and Imanutjob knows it.
