Even in Mel's great movie, I don't think the depiction of the crucifixion was as real as they actually did them in those times.........

You are quite right.
The bible says that Christ was no longer able to be recognized as human by the time it was over.
As horrible as it looked in the movie, Mel admitted in an interview to "pulling it back a bit" for the sake of his audience.
