Six world powers trying to solve an international crisis over Iran's nuclear programme could issue one last ultimatum - the fourth in four months

This must be an unclassified mental disorder - delusions of effectiveness.

More flexibility - whatever. The UN/EU has given them about 10 deadline extensions to date. If they only wanted peaceful nuclear power, they would let the inspectors into all their sites. They won't do that because it would reveal their weapons programs.

ultimatum

1. A final statement of terms made by one party to another.
2. A statement, especially in diplomatic negotiations, that expresses or implies the threat of serious penalties if the terms are not accepted.

By definition--there cannot be a series of ulimatums (or ultimata, if you prefer.) A final statement is just that. There cannot be statements after the final statement. That would be an oxymoron. It is the equivalent of:

a. Final score--Cowboys 17, Redskins 10,
followed by
Final score--Redskins 20, Cowboys 17

b. The smoker, promising to quit, had one last cigarette.
Then, he had another.

c. Adolph Hitler, after murdering six million Jews as the "Final Solution" to his perceived "Jewish Problem," then decided to put all the victims on trial.

Somebody throw out the ultimate ultimatum which is the classic, "triple dog dare" which in diplomatic circles is very seldom used. Are we sure with the relativism of today, we aren't being overly harsh? END SARC.

Update of the Who's leading the "ultimatum" (of course it's the French!), What, Where, when and Why of cited article from Iran Focus:

Iran results wanted in October - French official UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - Major powers want "results" on the nuclear dispute with Iran by the first week of October at the latest, a senior French diplomat said on Wednesday.

The United States, China, Britain, France, Russia and Germany agreed at a meeting on Tuesday to give European negotiator Javier Solana more time to try to reach a diplomatic solution with Tehran.

But French Foreign Minister Philippe Douste-Blazy told reporters "we're expecting a quick response from the Iranians" and a French diplomat speaking anonymously set the deadline as the first week of October.

The six major powers have offered Tehran economic and political inducements if it suspends uranium enrichment activities the West believes Iran is pursuing as part of a nuclear weapons program but which Tehran says is only aimed at generating electricity.

British Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett, speaking separately with reporters, said: "We've given Solana the mandate to go anywhere at any time in order to overcome the logistical difficulties which have so beset the Iranians. But that is not limited."

Britain's U.N. ambassador, Emyr Jones-Parry, said the chief Iranian negotiator, Ali Larijani, "definitely" was not coming to New York for talks with Solana as expected. This is the third time a recent planned Solana-Lariani meeting has been postponed, leading U.S. and European officials to believe there is an active debate going on in Iran about the nuclear program.
