New York, 21 Sept. (AKI) - Six world powers trying to solve an international crisis over Iran's nuclear programme could issue one last ultimatum - the fourth in four months - demanding that Iran halt sensitive nuclear work or face UN punitive measures.
A report in the Washington Post citing diplomatic sources said the decision was taken at a dinner on Tuesday attended by government officials with the five permanent members of the Security Council plus Germany and Italy, also involved in the Iran talks, who were in New York to attend a UN General Assembly.
Iran ignored economic, diplomatic and technology incentives offered by the US, Britain, France, China and Russia plus Germany on 6 June in exchange for a suspension of uranium enrichment work the international community fears is aimed at building nuclear weapons. It then failed to meet a 31 August UN deadline threatening it with sanctions if it did not stop enriching uranium.
Iran claims enriching uranium is its right insisting that its programme is solely for civilian use.
Italian prime minister Romano Prodi, who ever since stepping into power last May has sought a mediating role in the crisis, met Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Wednesday night in New York. Afterwards Prodi told reporters Iran was still open to talks but demanded more flexibility.
"Ahmadinejad indicated Iran is open to negotiate but more flexibility on both parts is necessary," said Prodi.
EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana and Iran's top nuclear negotiator Ali Larijani are reportedly scheduled to meet next week in a last-ditch attempt to solve the crisis diplomatically.

By definition--there cannot be a series of ulimatums (or ultimata, if you prefer.) A final statement is just that. There cannot be statements after the final statement. That would be an oxymoron. It is the equivalent of:
a. Final score--Cowboys 17, Redskins 10,
followed by
Final score--Redskins 20, Cowboys 17
b. The smoker, promising to quit, had one last cigarette.
Then, he had another.
c. Adolph Hitler, after murdering six million Jews as the "Final Solution" to his perceived "Jewish Problem," then decided to put all the victims on trial.

Iran results wanted in October - French official UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - Major powers want "results" on the nuclear dispute with Iran by the first week of October at the latest, a senior French diplomat said on Wednesday.
The United States, China, Britain, France, Russia and Germany agreed at a meeting on Tuesday to give European negotiator Javier Solana more time to try to reach a diplomatic solution with Tehran.
But French Foreign Minister Philippe Douste-Blazy told reporters "we're expecting a quick response from the Iranians" and a French diplomat speaking anonymously set the deadline as the first week of October.
The six major powers have offered Tehran economic and political inducements if it suspends uranium enrichment activities the West believes Iran is pursuing as part of a nuclear weapons program but which Tehran says is only aimed at generating electricity.
British Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett, speaking separately with reporters, said: "We've given Solana the mandate to go anywhere at any time in order to overcome the logistical difficulties which have so beset the Iranians. But that is not limited."
Britain's U.N. ambassador, Emyr Jones-Parry, said the chief Iranian negotiator, Ali Larijani, "definitely" was not coming to New York for talks with Solana as expected. This is the third time a recent planned Solana-Lariani meeting has been postponed, leading U.S. and European officials to believe there is an active debate going on in Iran about the nuclear program.

Well, there's a simple explanation, isn't there? Logistical difficulties prevented him from making his appointment. Perhaps he had a flat tire on the way to the airport.
