In his bid for re-election as governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger has a comfortable lead over Democratic challenger and state Treasurer Phil Angelides among the state's "high propensity" voters, according to a report released on Tuesday.
These voters also back two of four general obligation bond measures that lawmakers put on the November 7 ballot that seek billions of dollars in debt issuance for public works.
The celebrity governor, a Republican, has the support of 53.6 percent of high-propensity voters, compared with 31.4 percent backing Angelides. Another 11.4 percent of these voters favor other candidates and 3.6 percent are undecided, according to the report by Datamar Inc.
The El Cajon, California-based polling firm defines high-propensity voters as people who voted in the 2002 and 2004 primary and general elections.
The firm does not publish polling results of responses by likely voters, commonly surveyed by pollsters, because they may not follow through on their intentions on election day.
High-propensity voters support of only two of the four public works bond measures the Democrat-led legislature put on the ballot at the prodding of Schwarzenegger. The four measures combined will ask voters to approve $37 billion in debt.
Proposition 1B, which proposes $19.9 billion in debt for highway, transit and port projects, is backed by 55.9 percent of high-propensity voters, opposed by 31.2 percent and 12.9 percent are undecided.
Proposition 1E, which seeks $4.09 billion for levee and flood-control projects, has the support of 60.8 percent of high-propensity voters, is opposed by 27.7 percent and 11.5 percent are undecided.
Proposition 1C, which requests $2.5 billion for housing projects is opposed by 53.9 percent of high-propensity voters and favored by 34.5 percent, and 11.7 percent are undecided.
Proposition 1D, which proposes $10.4 billion in debt for upgrades to public schools, is opposed by 46.6 percent of high-propensity voters and backed by 41.4 percent and 12.0 percent are undecided.
A separate independent general obligation bond measure, Proposition 84, seeking $5.4 billion in debt for flood, water and conservation projects, has the support of 47.6 percent of high-propensity voters, is opposed by 36.3 percent and 16.0 percent are undecided.
Datamar's findings are based on a telephone survey of registered voters from September 12-15. The firm said the findings have a margin of error of plus or minus 2.3 percent at a confidence level of 95 percent.
For a State that gave us The Great Ronald Reagan, California certainly seems to have gone to the dogs...
Likely voters. Hmm. Well that takes out the usual CA "anti-Arnold" fringe -- they either will not vote, or will vote Angelides, and still it looks like Arnold will win. This is good.
Thank you for the ping.
Hopefully, votes for Republican Arnold will also usher in a groundswell of votes for the other Republican candidates as well, starting with Tom McClintock.
I suspect some will vote on all the down ticket races and leave the GUb selection untouched or write in someone as a protest vote.
There are a lot of important races and initiatives that need voting on as well, some of which are going to be very costly to this state at a time when it can least afford to take on more debt or more liberal rats in office.
In L.A.
They got a crowd of 75 according to KFI.
