WASHINGTON Conservative activists are heaping criticism on Sen. John McCain for fighting President Bush over proposed rules for the interrogation of terrorism suspects, a dispute that has reopened long-standing divisions between the maverick Republican lawmaker and his party's establishment.
The attack from the right, which coalesced over the weekend, could undercut McCain's effort to woo Bush backers and other party regulars for an anticipated 2008 presidential bid. His position on terrorism prisoners has fueled critics' skepticism about McCain's conservative credentials.
"This very definitely is going to put a chilling effect on the tremendous strides he has made in the conservative evangelical community," said the Rev. Louis P. Sheldon, chairman of the Traditional Values Coalition, one of several conservative activists who support Bush's proposal on interrogation techniques.
Even as conservative leaders berated McCain for refusing to yield to Bush, the high-profile battle could burnish the Arizonan's credentials among admirers who have been concerned about his moves to court the GOP establishment.

Sorry -- I thought you meant McCain. All I know about Barber is good -- and he certainly seems competent, the way he's getting Mississippi through Katrina and post-Katrina. Haven't heard much from him lately -- undoubtedly, he's too busy doing his actual job (many could take a lesson here!). And I don't know that much about him, but I'm more than willing to listen!
POW just went POOF on this one.
As a young man John McCain served his country as a Naval Aviator.
During the late 60s and early 70s so did almost every male.

He flew missions against the most heavily defended airspace in history.
Not even close.
___________________________________________________________
He was held prisoner under inhumane conditions for over five years.
He was given preferential treatment, which is well documented. I can not say if it was because of the information he was feeding the cong or if it was because of who his father was, but he did not suffer like the other POWs.

He was shot down.
Well, you got one right.
I should have said, "During the late 60s and early 70s so did almost every 18 to 25 year old male."
As a young man, McLame served his country, just as EVERY OTHER male between the age of 18 and 25 HAD TO. Ever hear of the draft?
He NEVER would have been allowed to be a Naval Aviator, if his father and grandfather weren't who they were. He would have been washed out.
Nam was NOT "the most heavily defended airspace in history" ; not even close.
Yes, he was held prisoner, but he was given special treatment.
He's also divorced the woman who stood by him, when he was a prisoner, to marry a younger woman, whose father had political pull, money, and connections to THE MOB.
He was part of THE KEATING FIVE...which makes him a crook!
He's got a terrible temper, a gigantic ego, and is the co-author of the CFR.
You're right...facts DON"T change and I suggest that you learn some.
A cold room, is NOT akin to putting someone in a freezer. Hypothermia isn't induced in a 50 degree room.
Torture, REALL torture, consists of things such as the CHINESE WATER TORTURE ( which is nothing like water boarding, BTW ), pulling people's fingernails out with pliers, slamming them into an IRON MAIDEN, using thumb or toe screws, THE BOOT, THE RACK, and hot pokers. Most of that list has been used, in the past, by order of a church.
Is sleep deprivation torture, to you?
He's also praised that idiot Bloomberg's suggestion that welfare and the poor, who aren't on welfare, get paid, in a sliding scale, for doing things such as brushing their teeth, taking a bath, making your their kids go to school, seeing a doctor. Sheer idiocy!
Spot on!
He's been dead in the water for several years now and has only been kept afloat by the MSM who keeps bailing out the water.......
Bring on the primaries, I can't wait for this jackass to be served his comeuppance.............Maybe then he will go away.
Oh, and see my tagline, your life.
And a straight talker
My husband was in the Air Force. Maybe you want to talk to him; dear. :-)
The minute someone posts: "stay on your meds", as you did, that's the giveaway, that they have not only lost the debate, but are so frustrated by being hit over the head with hard cold facts, which they can NOT refute, that that's all they can come up with to say. LOL
I have a great life; unlike you.
Which of our armed services did YOU serve in? When did YOU serve, if you served? Where did YOU see active service, IF you served?
Why is this hard to grok? You are not permitted to target the will and spirit of a man entirely under your power in order to break it and reduce him to a compliant plaything of your will. That he is entirely in your power confers upon you the obligation to be a human being rather than a fiend. If you choose to be a fiend, I really don't care how many other fiends you can point to, you aren't on my side and you aren't protecting me and you are not helping. You are my enemy and you are putting me under the moral obligation to fight and disarm you, which is extremely inconvenient.
We don't need to give our officers agents and politicians advanced classes on torture, we need to give them remedial classes on chivalry.
Being a martyr may appeal to you, but frankly, if some form of what YOU consider to be "torture" ( which I don't;72 hours? new mothers are sleep deprived for much longer than that !) would save thousands of innocent lives, I say go for it.
I am most assuredly NOT a "fiend". You're going to "come after me", are you? LOL
The "if" does not run. What is actually at stake is making it marginally easier to catch a few murderers out of a sea of thousands, while as far as in your lies, losing the war against the remaining thousands by cutting your own support in half.
So first I and those who agree will just have to deliver my nation (which is not your nation) from the likes of you. Which will be easy enough.
You're wrong. Dead wrong!
