Rudy spoke to our high school this evening as part of a program by a local organization. I know a lot here don't like him and see him as too liberal, I have to say after watching him that he "gets" it. I'm not yet old enough to vote, but I will be in '08, and I know where its going when I can.
He started out the speech with a funny story about his first trial as a prosecutor. He really is a warm guy, and truly does look like he enjoys talking to people. He spent a lot of time on terrorism. I was somewhat suprised with what seemed to be his grasp of the terrorism topic in an "international" way...I had expected him to talk about more "domestic" topics regarding terrorism like homeland security, but he really did seem to understand the theoretical and conceptual nature of the war on terror.
He continued his remarks with some very positive comments about Iraq (no doubt if he was elected he'd do the right thing), the President, and the general WOT. He then took questions. To paraphrase:
"Are you running for president?" "That's a decision I'll make at the beginning of next year, but I'm honored to be considered in the running for it"
"What was going through your mind on 9/11?" He talked about losing so many friends, feeling all alone, and at one point just resolving to make the best decisions he could and hope for the best.
The last "question" was actually very moving. A woman stood up and, on the verge of tears, said "I was in New York on 9/11, and I just want to say thank you." she was overwhelmed with emotion and had to sit. This recieved great applause from the audience.
Overall, I found Rudy to be a warm guy who would make a great leader and a great manager. Not only will he win if nominated, but he would do a great job leading our country through this time.

You should have seen him give it to the lib Metro press. This is a guy who took Bush-level moonbat heat every day from the left, called "Hitler" hourly, constantly accused of imperialism, delusions of dictatorship, the usual vile leftist vitriol. He never flinched.

widespread legal CCW is not the solution to crime in an urban environment - you'd have people blowing each other away on the subways everyday. its a stressful place to live, I don't want to hop onhe subway everyday with 100 people packing .357 magnums.
of course, when the police were ineffectual, and crime was rampant, the natural inclination of the honest person is to say "I need a gun for self defense". I understand that. but there are other ways to reduce crime, by actually using the police effectively.
So, in your opinion, which one of these is George W. Bush?

I work part-time in one of the administrative offices...and while I am certainly small-time...you'd be suprised what one can learn from filing correspondence!
We usually only get DBM rhetoric so I always appreciate a first hand, real time report or experience. Thanks for posting. Rudy is a fine American and those seem to be few and far between. Your post actually made me think.

Basically what you have in Rudy is a law-and-order guy, which is fine if he's not engaged in goreing your ox - eg, gun control. But the law that he upholds isn't recognizable to a Texan. On the "social issues I'd say he's pretty much poison. And with the divorce in his background I don't think he'll change. Reagan was divorced by Jane Wyman, but that wasn't Reagan's initiative and never would have been if Wyman had held her end up. But, in real life in only takes one side to make an argument.
Rudy started life as a hot dog prosecutor who liked frog-march photo ops and didn't always have the goods on the people he treated that way. Bottom line: I just don't see him holding the solid south anything like GWB has done. And I wonder if he can get enough blue state votes to compensate. He's easily better than Hillary - but then, most Democrats meet that standard. I hope.
I just have trouble thinking that good candidates can actually be that thin on the ground. We might have to consider a good senator, such as Santorum - even if he were to lose in November '06, Heaven forefend.

As good a senator as Rick is, is he too far-right to win the swing states? That was part of the appeal for Rudy...he's easily electable, and at the same time you know he's not gonna give an inch on national security stuff.
What if he picked a Santorum-like guy to be VP? He would have to chose someone with very strong conservative background...who?

IMO, they wish he was a conservative. But he's not. And while I respect him for his stance on the WOT, you have to remember his liberalism impacts in other ways. For example, what happens if a Supreme Justice retires? He'll appoint a "moderate". Which basically means we'll get more decisions like Hamden. How is that decision helping, or not helping, to impact the WOT?
We aren't just talking about preserving R v W, we're talking about the real likelihood he'll appoint judges that continue to harm our ability to fight the terrorists. Not with the deliberate intent they do that perhaps, but it'll be the end result of appointing a "moderate" (liberal) to the court.
Like I said, I respect him, but in good conscience can't support his candidacy.
however, I'm glad you got to see him. He can give a very sincere inspiring speech through a screen, so I imagine the force in person is pretty compelling. It'll be a nice memory to hold on to.
who has more executive experience - a US senator, or the Mayor of the capital city of the world? fiscal issues, taxes, agencies responsible for transportation and education - just about everything except foreign policy, and let's face it, few presidential candidates are going to emerge with strong foreign policy records.
yes, those state amendments about marriage are exactly the way that issue should be decided. and if those same states have the political consensus to ban all abortion, let them have at it.
regarding your other questions - that's what the primaries are for.
I'm not gonna pretend to be an expert, but from everything I know his biggest strengths are his management style and his leadership abilites. I couldn't really compare pre- and post-Giuliani New York, but if I understand correctly, he pretty much turned the place around...slashed crime rates, really brought the city back. I'm not sure if it was Giuliani, but wasn't Times Square a real sh*thole before he came in? Lots of porn stores and such...I think he cleaned it up. I guess my point in all of this is...the guy gets results. And plus, he didn't flinch to have Arafat thrown out of the Lincoln Center and told that Saudi guy he could do you know what with the money he tried to give him...the guy has balls.

I take it you're still living at home? Wait 'til you're on your own, watching what happens to your paycheck and you have to file a tax return. That may change your mind about RINOs :)
