Rudy spoke to our high school this evening as part of a program by a local organization. I know a lot here don't like him and see him as too liberal, I have to say after watching him that he "gets" it. I'm not yet old enough to vote, but I will be in '08, and I know where its going when I can.
He started out the speech with a funny story about his first trial as a prosecutor. He really is a warm guy, and truly does look like he enjoys talking to people. He spent a lot of time on terrorism. I was somewhat suprised with what seemed to be his grasp of the terrorism topic in an "international" way...I had expected him to talk about more "domestic" topics regarding terrorism like homeland security, but he really did seem to understand the theoretical and conceptual nature of the war on terror.
He continued his remarks with some very positive comments about Iraq (no doubt if he was elected he'd do the right thing), the President, and the general WOT. He then took questions. To paraphrase:
"Are you running for president?" "That's a decision I'll make at the beginning of next year, but I'm honored to be considered in the running for it"
"What was going through your mind on 9/11?" He talked about losing so many friends, feeling all alone, and at one point just resolving to make the best decisions he could and hope for the best.
The last "question" was actually very moving. A woman stood up and, on the verge of tears, said "I was in New York on 9/11, and I just want to say thank you." she was overwhelmed with emotion and had to sit. This recieved great applause from the audience.
Overall, I found Rudy to be a warm guy who would make a great leader and a great manager. Not only will he win if nominated, but he would do a great job leading our country through this time.
Sorry for the length, I just felt like recounting this to someone...please feel free to provide feedback.
I pay SS, Medicare, and all that crap on my (astoundingly meager to begin with) earnings...but hey, if slightly higher taxes is the price I gotta pay to have a guy sitting in the chair who I know won't flinch in defense of this country...I'll pay it. But to this I will confess some ignorance...does he have a history as a big taxer-and-spender?
Thanks for taking the time to write this up and post it. Interesting.
Rudy may not be the perfect GOP candidate, due to his personal history with the messy divorce, and his prostate cancer, and his somewhat liberal views on some subjects ... but I like him. I like him a lot. The man GETS the War on Terror. He knows what the score is with the Islamofascists. He understands the danger of letting Iraq slip away from us. And I believe he will fearlessly kick butt as needed to keep our country safe. Unless GOP Superman comes along to be better than him, Rudy's got my vote.
Great post!
Never forget that every politician is one or more of the following: a sociopath, a liar, a traitor, or a crook.
Most politicians are decent human beings!
You should have seen him give it to the lib Metro press. This is a guy who took Bush-level moonbat heat every day from the left, called "Hitler" hourly, constantly accused of imperialism, delusions of dictatorship, the usual vile leftist vitriol. He never flinched.
I'm tending to agree with you ~
Giuliani's tried and true.
Unfortunately, we do have to think about electability. Santorum is my man...I'm proud to have him serve as my Senator, but there is no way he would ever get elected. A Giuliani vs. just about anybody match would result in a Rudy victory, and while some of his policies might be too liberal for some of us, we have to consider what would be better for the country...a strong willed anti-terrorist who will protect this nation at all costs despite some of his failings, or a Feingold/Hillary/liberal pansy candidate who will hold up the white flag and surrender.
When you say we can do a "hell of a lot better", who did you have in mind?
Actually, not.
Nor will he appoint liberal judges. Law and order all the way.
I actually started reading his book "Leadership"...he really does have an effective management style that demands accountability. It discusses in great length the means he used to fight crime and all the other problems in the city. It also mentioned that he cut taxes significantly...
Again, some will disagree with me, but he's a guy I think would make a good President.
Same here. Rudy will make a great president.
I haven't read Leadership, although its on the list. Prince of the City was excellent.
I didn't read Prince of the City, but I would reccomend Leadership. Its part memoir, part management book...read it not for its suggestions but for the insight it gives on his leadership and management style. The guy gets results.
2008 ought to be interesting, especially with McCain's inate ability to self-implode.
The Saudis are working to increase their production capability to account for Iran's, should Iran pull theirs off the market as an economic weapon. That is in our best interests. That is why the terrorists have made several attempts to attack oil refineries in Saudi Arabia and Yemen.
The Saudis are not friends of the Iranians and they have had a quiet working relationship with us since well before Gulf War I. Bush has made his fair share of mistakes and bad judgments - most notably on the domestic front - but he knows what he's doing in regard to Saudi. The Saudi gov't fears Al-Qaeda (our enemies), fears Wahhabis (our enemies) in general, and fears the thought of Iran (our enemy) as a regional hegemon with nuclear weapons and a nation of Shia radicals.
We can continue to not look past the fact that 19 hijackers came from Saudi (and had no significant ties to the Saudi gov't) or we can recognize the benefit of using the Saudi gov't in our efforts to prevent Iran from becoming even more dangerous. The outcry against Saudi is less fallacious than the outcry against France, but fallacious nonetheless.
