One of the most heart warming moments of my life was after I had freed a baby bird that had been tangled in a string in it's own nest after all the others had left.

My then-6-year-old daughter watched from several feet away as I climbed a ladder and snipped the string away while the bird pecked and scratched at my hand. The little bird took off in awkward spiral and landed on a roof across the street. She just stood there beaming and finally declared with great pride, "you're just like Steve Irwin, Daddy!"

I'll remember that moment as long as I live, and probably tell that story at her wedding.

I wish my son would have felt more like Steve Irwin while saving the baby bird he did two and a half years ago. Instead he said he felt like Steve Irwin when he was poking in the grass around a structure in our grass and came across a brown recluse that crawled onto the stick he was using. After about 30 seconds of admiring it he threw it back.

When my now 9-year old grandson was 3, I took him on his first camping trip. He was playing in the grass and appeared to be watching something. When I went over to check it out, I saw that he had a toy snake that I'd bought him earlier that day. He picked it up and said, "he's a beauty!"

Even back when he was just a toddler, he would watch episodes of Crocodile Hunter back to back. He always preferred watching Steve to watching some of the other inane stuff that passes for children's programming. Still does.
