WASHINGTON - The White House told lawmakers it would send Congress a revised proposal late Monday for dealing with terrorism suspects as the number of GOP senators publicly opposing President Bush's initial plan continued to grow.
A Republican-led Senate committee last week defied Bush and approved terror-detainee legislation that Bush vowed to block. Sen. John Warner, normally a Bush supporter, pushed the measure through his Senate Armed Services Committee by a 15-9 vote.
John Ullyot, a spokesman for Warner, said the Virginia senator expected to receive another draft of the legislation. No details were immediately available.

I find this debate so ironic. While the pols in the US argue over ways to garner info from terrorists without inflicting any discomfort, the terrorists are plotting the most painful deaths possible on the largest amounts of innocents possible. But of course we won't know what the plot is until it's too late, because Americans "take the high road."
We waterboard our own special ops guys to teach them how to withstand interrogation. How many times have you been suspended from FR this year, btw? 12-14?
Do you consider the abu graib stuff (Stripping people naked, having them pile on each other in human pyramids, making people masterbate and photographing them, sleep deprivation, long periods of forced standing, having dogs bark at crouched prisoners) toruture? Do you think it is permissible under the Geneva Convention as currently written? Did we do any of this to Jap or Kraut prisoners in WWII? Any naked pyramids, that kind of stuff? A lot of what went on in abu graib is a reflection of the lowered morals of modern America - the porn generation.
I should hope so, because they might be captured by Mooslim fanatic barbarians. But that isn't an argument for the United States to adopt such tactics, because we aren't barbarians.

I haven't counted, but it's not going to stop me from saying what I believe. Freedom of speech is a basic freedom, and I use that freedom. Being hooted at for my opinions is nothing new for me, and no big deal. I grew up, a conservative Republican, in a neighborhood of liberal Democrats. They were as intolerant of my views as the Bushbots are today. I'm still a conservative Republican. Problem is, Bush isn't (on too many issues, anyway) and his lockstep followers don't want to hear anyone point that out.
Uh huh. Riiiiight.
You and I joined FR in the same year - 98. Those who call me a "troll" who came on this site supposedly with the purpose of bashing our Iraq mission and undermine Bush, have to explain why I was here, in 98, long before what I consider the unwise and unnecessary invasion of Iraq. Back in 98 I was calling for Clintoon's impeachment. Two years later, I was cheering for Bush's election (Bush as candidate said he wasn't into reckless foreign adventures and "nation building" -- when I say the same thing today, I'm a "troll"). I also cheered his promised for lower spending. He didn't deliver, unfortunately. He DID cut taxes - and gave us good judges - but beyond that, there's been a lot of big-government liberalism. Oh, and in 2000, I was leading the call for Gore to stop his attempted coup after election night. Gore is coming back in 2008, and I'll be just as opposed to him as ever.
Hell no.
Do you think it is permissible under the Geneva Convention as currently written?
There's no way to determine if it violates the vague language of Common Article Three, without clarification, but the question is irrelevant because there's about five different reasons why the Geneva Conventions do not apply.
ROTFLMAOAPIMPRFI
My question regarding torture and McCain is "did McCain talk?" So then, did the torture work contrary to the claims being made that torture doesn't work?
Fine. He will take more democRAT voters away from the rat candidate than republicans away from Bush.
TOO SCARY!
Yea .. but I'm tired of this
The President shouldn't have to do this
We all know that you hate the fact that we are in Afghanistan and in Iraq and that you ONLY post garbage, which you think will harm this president.
Do you wear your burka when you post to FR; dear? ;^)
Then so is Gen. Vessey and, from what I've heard, the entire JAG corps, because they're siding with McCain in this controversy. It's uncomfortable, for me, to be on the same side as someone - McCain - who I don't generally respect, but on this issue he's right.
And I've been here as long as you have, so please don't throw how long YOU have been here at me.
He's not bailing them out. He has no interest in bailing them out. Just yesterday, I saw a headline flash on the screen on C-SPAN that said that Bush was doing this to get Congress to clarify their idiotic bill. Doing so will make sure that idiots like McCain, Graham, Warner Collins, et. al, look like the buffoons they are to the American people.
Has nothing to do with the White House caving or throwing life rafts. McCain, Graham, Warner Collins, et. al drafted this stupid bill, they should account for it's stupidity.
No. You're one of these token liberals Jim was talking about yesterday.
