Bush to send interrogation compromise to Hill (Bush throwing the RINOs a life raft)

WASHINGTON - The White House told lawmakers it would send Congress a revised proposal late Monday for dealing with terrorism suspects as the number of GOP senators publicly opposing President Bush's initial plan continued to grow.

A Republican-led Senate committee last week defied Bush and approved terror-detainee legislation that Bush vowed to block. Sen. John Warner, normally a Bush supporter, pushed the measure through his Senate Armed Services Committee by a 15-9 vote.

John Ullyot, a spokesman for Warner, said the Virginia senator expected to receive another draft of the legislation. No details were immediately available.

I heard Dick Morris on H&C tonight, and he said that by the end of this year, Congress will have worked for 90 - that's ninety - days, for which they were paid $162,000!

I'm outraged! That's $1800 a day. Even at 12-hour days, that's $150 an hour...a 10-hour day is $180 an hour...and an 8-hour day is $225 an hour.

Not to mention free transportation, health care, and all the other amenities...and yet they can't come up with simple legislation to protect this country?

They need to do their f'ing jobs, period!

Why have we been able to function under the Geneva convention for more than 50 years without a need to "clarify" the supposedly "vague" provisions? Maybe we never did the kind of treatment of prisoners, before, that's happening now? I'm not sure that's progress.

You are wrong about not having them clarified before. Cong. Rec. S17486-01 (daily ed., Oct. 27, 1990)

President Bush is trying to clarify the definitions for noncombatants. As far as WWII goes, the Japanese internment camps might meet the definition of inhumane and degrading treatment. Today the terms Jap and Kraut might be considered degrading.

Were the internees ever forced to remove their clothes and pile up on each other, naked? Were any of them waterboarded? Were any of them forced to crouch in a corner while a dog barked at him? Were any of them forced to masterbate and photographed while doing so?

The part that dealt in depth with POWs was written in 1949, revising the earlier one from 1927.

And where is it written that we advocate torture of prisoners? FGS, we DON'T torture them...the President is merely asking for CLARIFICATION of what we can and cannot do, to protect American interrogators.

Why are you ALWAYS on "their" side?

This an excellent move...look at the BIG PICTURE...he has trapped the DEMS. Now if anyone on the left comes out to oppose the "compromise" they will be in favor of going soft on terrorists.<p.Masterful move.

Causing them excrutiating pain with requisite permanent, or semi-permanent health problems, is torture.

What about the use of Sodium Pentathol? That seems humane to me.

Every frat boy in America would like to wear a pair of womans panties on their head this weekend, but for a terrorist, it is torture. The whole debate has turned into a public relations stunt for the politicians.

Unfortunetly, Its RINOs or Speaker Pelosi.

you pick.
maybe that can change in 2008, but the political landscape is just too moderate right now.

Maybe we never fought a fanatical, non-uniformed group of Islamic jihadists who would sooner kill you than look at you.

And please give me a list of countries we fought against in the last 50 years who respected the Geneva convention. Would that be North Korea? They are a non-signatory. North Viet Nam? Ask McCain himself how well POW's were treated. Iraq? I believe we still don't know the whereabouts of Scott Speicher and we have on-camera video of prisioners being "humiliated", not to mention their off-camera torture.

At this rate, little kids will be suing their parents for torture.

Time out, "go to your room", vacumming, "bad food" can all be construed as torture.

How many times did YOU say: "That's not fair" when your parent induced "torture"?

I don't have any patience for this stupidity. God must look after our country, because He knows that the politicians won't.

Well how nice that john mccain, weasel graham and john warner now all find themselves in agreement with jimmy carter. I never expect much from susan collins but how interesting.
That's all we need to know. mccain has destroyed any chances of becoming potus. His ego overcomes all reason.
The other just lap along.

The Geneva Convention was designed for one purpose, to protect everyone else except our troops but unfortunately too many in our country has yet to realize it.

Has Susan Collins had a stroke or something? What's up with that slow, labored speech pattern. I can't listen to her.

"Lindsey Graham is a goober."

Literally. I bet he walks around at parties doing his Cary Grant impersonation--"Judyjudyjudy!" a la the George Lindsey character. Hey! Lindsey Graham -- George Lindsey! That can't be a coincidence!
