In just the last month, two separate homeowners killed black bears that threatened them while Arizona Game and Fish officers put down three others who got a little too close to people in Southeastern Arizona.
Sound sleeping black bears, a rare photo opportunity, but this mama and her two cubs were found at the Tucson Airport.
Kurt Bahti, a field supervisor for the Game & Fish says, "If they're not yielding to humans and they're aggressive then we will euthanize them."
These weren't killed -- only tranquilized into a deep sleep. They never hurt anyone, but they might one day because they're desperate to find food.
Bahti said, "I imagine there will be a lot of bears that aren't fit to go into den. They'll be out scrounging all winter and causing some real problems because there will be even less food then."
So they're traveling down to the desert grassland in Sonoita.
Bahti says they're eating food left behind by illegal immigrants.
Bahti said, "Tuna, when they find an open can like this and can smell it and lick it out and then the next time they put two and two together and then they realize that they can get into these other cans and pop them, they just chew them up and get the food out."
This is the perfect example. Take a look at the punctures on this can of sardines, each made by the canines of a black bear.
Bahti said, "They have an excellent sense of smell. They can pick up odors from a long ways off."
Trekking in for miles, Bahti says, these furry creatures are getting used to seeing people in the desert.
Bahti says, "A lot of the undocumented aliens and smugglers will stop at springs and layover and leave a tremendous amount of trash there and of course wildlife goes to that spring. There's the trash and the bears starting working on it."
The bears are looking for food anywhere they can to fatten themselves up for hibernation and that begins in late November.
Now the Illegals have added a new threat.
Maybe the bears will find a way into the hearts of our elected officials and start collecting welfare checks, housing, SSI, free education, and everything else offered to illegal aliens. After all, they are creatures of color.
As Bears are creatures of habit once conditioned maybe they will find a new food source --- one that comes to them???
You know, if we could somehow get a bunch more bears down there this whole situation might just sort itself out on its own. I'm just sayin', that's all.
"As Bears are creatures of habit once conditioned maybe they will find a new food source --- one that comes to them???"
We can only hope.
Interestingly enough I recently read an article in an Irish newspaper that claimed more then 50,000 Irish illegal enter the U.S. each year, mostly through Canada.
That's what I saw ... may the border bear country.
The first word I hear about a potato blight and I'm gonna' have to kick some illegal Irish a$$.
And I am Irish.
At least I think I am.
Maybe it's more Mexican-Irish....?
Is the statue of Liberty still holding up a torch, or a taco?
Welcome to FR!
To hell with black bears, they are too mild mannered. I say we transplant a bunch of Grizzlies to the border area, after keeping them in cages without food for about a week. That should do it.
If they weren't bothering the homeowners, i'd say leave the bears, and we will achieve a natural balance. Bears eat illegals, win-win.
A lot of the Irish illegals fly right into Boston. There is a massive Irish community in South boston for them to blend into.
The INS station in Boston mostly dealt with irish & chinese while I worked in the area in the late 80's.
Where's the liberal/environut outrage? Save the bears or save the illegals?
What's a hippie to do?
