NEC sent an employee to shadow a craftsman at PacBell to cobble up instruction manuals for a new telephone switch. The craftsman referred to his portable handset as a "buttinski". Some months later, the documentation showed up for the new telephone switch. Test procedures called for connecting the "buttinski" to the subscriber line.
Language and culture frequently fail to communicate clearly in a literal translation.

I can't vouch for that site, but I read similar articles from a dozen reputable sources when I first came across it. The one I posted was just the first-up on google. If you google the address and O.S.S. or Roosevelt, you'll get lots more substantiation.
In light of the building's terrible demise, it makes for interesting reading.
