Residents Cash In Guns for Peace of Mind

District Police Host Buyback to Get Firearms Out of Homes and Off the Streets

Francinina Jones grabbed her husband's long shotgun, the one he became attached to during years of hunting, and marched straight to the police station in Southeast D.C.

"I wanted the gun out of the house," said Jones, 55, who lives in Southeast and traded the firearm for a $50 payment from the city. "There's too much killing, all these young people have guns."

Jones and hundreds of others got cash for guns as part of the police department's gun buyback program, which yesterday netted 337 firearms and paid area residents about $16,700.

Those who turned in guns at one of three District police stations tended to be middle-aged or older people who had firearms lying around the house and no longer had a use for them. Many said they did not want them to be stolen or involved in an accident.

"You're not going to get the guy going around robbing people on the street turning in guns," said Cmdr. Joel Maupin, who is in charge of the department's 7th District in Southeast.

If police can reduce the number of guns in homes, they can cut down on the likelihood they will make it to the street, Maupin said.

The department paid for the weapons with $250,000 it received as part of the emergency crime bill the city passed in July in response to a spike in homicides, robberies and other crime.

Police got everything from TEC-9 pistols to hunting rifles. Some people also turned in ammunition.

Francinina seems to have a syllable extra.

Hi All-

The only time this kind of event should ever be used is to "surrender" a handful of rusty old BB/pellet guns that were heading for the garbage heap, anyway. Might as well place that money back into the pockets of pro-RKBA folks to invest in new firearms.

Amazing lack of logic here...

This story cannot be true.

Any state or jurisdiction wise enough to enact gun laws of the severity of DC's (the strictest in the nation), by definition, must be free of guns and must be a nirvana of peace.

We all know that gun control laws are THE definitive answer to gun violence. And since DC has the nation's strictest gun laws, then it follows that DC must be the most crime-free place in the US, and that the number of guns within its borders must be zero.

So, DC residents could not possibly possess guns, because guns are against the law. How silly to have an amnesty program!

""You're not going to get the guy going around robbing people on the street turning in guns," said Cmdr. Joel Maupin, who is in charge of the department's 7th District in Southeast."

The truth: And this program just ups the robber's chance of surviving his next endeavour.

"If police can reduce the number of guns in homes, they can cut down on the likelihood they will make it to the street, Maupin said. "

The Fantasy: Criminals will get the firearms they need one way or another. Disarming people (even the stupid ones) simply ensures the growth of the PD...for the children.

Ruefully,
Top sends

Heh. I wonder how that woman's husband feels about it. He's either dead or pissed. Fifty bucks for a long used hunting shotgun. Imagine the memories lost for fifty bucks.

I wonder how much of a divorce attorney she could buy with fifty bucks.

Anyone who'd volutarily give up his Tec-9 is an absolute fool.

Maybe it was used in a couple of homicides ("too hot to handle") and/or had a broken bolt handle or firing pin?

In any event, it seems they have a reputation for being inaccurate and also frquently jamming when trying to feed anything other than FMJ ammo. Also pieces of the gun seem to break off with use...

I'd gladly pay $1 over whatever the polizei were offering for it!

That'd be funny stuff if someone set up a table right next to the police offering a better price.

Seems like "all these young people have guns" (I'm assuming she is talking about gangsters, not kids hunting squirrels with their fathers) would be a very good reason to have a gun for self defense.

So now when some thugs, or group of thugs, break into her house and threaten her and her husband with knives or handguns, she or her husband won't be able to grab the shotgun to defend themselves.

If you ever think about using a firearm to defend yourself in the District, it better indeed be a last resort. You will get no sympathy from the politicians or the cops, and, unless you are a person of prominence and preferably a Democrat, you can pretty much count on being prosecuted. Such is the sad state of life in our nation's capital.
