'Remarks Not My Views'

Updated: 18:52, Sunday September 17, 2006

The Pope has appeared in public to say the remarks he made about Islam which sparked fury across the Muslim world did not in any way reflect his personal views.

Benedict XVI had been under pressure to make a personal apology following a controversial speech he made in Germany on Tuesday.

In the Somalian capital Mogadishu an Italian nun was attacked and killed by gunmen. Sources said there was a very high possibility the incident was linked to the speech.

The Pope told a crowd at his summer retreat at Castle Gandolfo, ltaly, he was "very upset and sorry" his remarks had caused such a reaction.

"This was a citation from a medieval text which doesn't express in any way whatsoever my personal opinion," he said.

He said the speech had been an "invitation to... frank and sincere dialogue".

In it, he referred to criticism of the Prophet Mohammed by a 14th-century Byzantine emperor.

The passage said everything Mohammed brought was evil "such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached".

Using the terms "jihad" and "holy war", the Pope said violence was "incompatible with the nature of God".

Protests in Pakistan Initially Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood said the apology was sufficient.

"We consider that the new statements represent a retreat from what went before. We can consider them a sufficient apology, even if we had wanted the Pope to outline his ideas and vision of Islam," said deputy leader Mohammed Habib.

However, later the brotherhood appeared to change its mind and said the Pope had not made a "clear" apology.

The Muslim Council of Britain welcomed the Pope's explanation.

A spokesman said: "We very much welcome the Pope's statement in which he made it clear that his own views do not in any way accord with those of the 14th century emperor.

"This is a very important clarification that we had been seeking. Had this caveat been included in the Pope's original speech it may have prevented this controversy in the first place."

Demonstrations by Muslims around the world saw effigies of the Pope burned and threw doubt over the his planned visit to Turkey in November, with the country's Prime Minister insisting the comments must be withdrawn.

It was also revealed the national security level in Italy had been stepped up in the wake of threats to the pontiff from Islamic groups.

Not one word at Mass today. Prayers for our soldiers in Iraq, but not one for Pope Benedict.

No different?? I'll tell you how they're different! WE are not threatening to kill him. WE didn't murder an innocent woman over this.

I said: "Demands from FReepers that he take ownership of them aren't much different than the demands by Muslims that he reject them."

Note that I was being specific as to the point of putting word into the Pope's mouth. That is, I'm not drawing comparisons to the general "reaction" of Muslims or others in what I said.

How dissapointing.

So. What exactly is the Pope's personal opinion of Islam? I don't see that he broadcat his personal opinions for our consideration.

Perhaps his own opinion is even harsher than the Emperor's?

There's an old scholastic phrase -- recitando non asserendo. He's just saying the same thing, that he quoted rather than asserted the words.

WWJD?

Did Jesus apologize for offending the Pharisees by calling them "hypocrites", "blind fools", "serpents", and a "brood of vipers" who are filled inside with "every kind of filth" and "evildoing"?

When he was hauled before the Jewish leaders whom he raged against, did he say he was sorry for offending them?

When he was turned over to the mobs screaming for his crucifixion, did he make a public "clarification" of what he had said about their religious leaders to quell their anger and try to initiate a "sincere dialogue" with them?

Then neither should the Pope about the Muslims.

But.... although I KNEW the Pope would back down and surrender to the terrorists - it still wrenches my gut to see it happen.

I don't see how this is disappointing. The Pope said he was sorry for the "reaction" to his remarks and gave further explanation. The Pope was misrepresented in the press and his remarks were taken totally out of context. He is a head of state (Vatican), not to mention shepherding well more than 1 Billion Roman Catholics world-wide, and as such, every word is measured.

Let's put it this way, IMHO, I think Pope Benedict wants dialogue between Islam and Christianity. The title of the speech given at Regensburg University was: "Faith, Reason and the University Memories and Reflections".

Here's a link to the entire speech:

Dialogue - an exchange of ideas or opinions on a particular issue, esp. a political or religious issue, with a view to reaching an amicable agreement or settlement. (Just for clarity's sake, lol).

I'm an agnostic but respect him nonetheless for standing upto what he believes in ... this sure has shaken one's faith and would have disappointed millions of his followers that the Pope cannot stand by his words. ( though I would say he has saved a few thousand christian lives in Muslim majority countries where christian are hostages ). Only points clearly that muslims are today more powerfull than christians despite western technology and is a wake up call for everyone. The cancer is spreading ... they are there at you doorsteps and are not just the "continent's problem" which Nazism once was.

You have an interesting tagline. I agree that allah must be a demon, but how can you be certain that satan himself plays the role of allah? I would expect him to delegate that post to a somewhat lesser demon.... though I can't be certain of course.

The taglines are a large part of my reason for coming to the Free Republic. They can convey much in few words.

which doesn't express in any way whatsoever my personal opinion,

Why did he include it in his speech then? Of course he believes it, as any sane person would who's been breathing on this planet. He realizes just what teeny fused firecrackers with these Islamic mass murdering crazies are, so decided to humor them.

Well, to the ragheads, "Allah" is their supreme being, and Satan is the most supreme evil entity I know of, so that's my guess.

The Pope, as far as I can tell, never said what his personal opinion is.

For all we know, the Pope's opinion of Islam is worse than what he quoted.

I'm not really being critical of the Pope. I think he naively believed that Muslims would respect his office and authority, and, like most Europeans, underestimated the evil and violent response of these animals.

I believe he threw 'em a bone with the "not in any way my opinion" ploy to try to diffuse a bad situation.

I could be wrong.
