Imams told to preach in English

AUSTRALIA'S Islamic clerics have been told they must draw on the teachings of Islam to condemn terrorism, and preach in English.

The federal Parliamentary Secretary for Immigration and Multicultural Affairs Andrew Robb today called on more than 100 Australian imams and Muslim leaders attending a government-sponsored conference to denounce extremist misrepresentations of Islam.

“We live in a world of global terrorism where vile acts are regularly being perpetrated in the name of your faith,” Mr Robb told the two-day conference which started today.

“Because it is your faith that is being invoked as justification for these evil acts, it is your problem.

“You cannot wish it away or ignore it just because it has been caused by others.”

The taxpayer-funded conference, which was intended for earlier this year, was initially the brainchild of the now divided Australian Federation of Islamic Councils.

I agree with the government trying to get the imams to do the right thing BUT it is abhorent to see government telling religions what to do.

History will write us as the once great nation.

We had the numbers to go in and take Terry Schiavo .. we sat in the streets and were intimidated by a half a dozen city cops ... who were probably on our side.

Where's that picture, from the x42 years, of President Washington ... crying?

You can't have one without the other. Unless the government makes its views known, it cannot influence the imams.

If it was trying to pass laws to restrict them that would be different - and would almost certainly be a violation of the Australian Constitution which contains fairly similar provisions on freedom of religion to those in the US Bill of Rights.

I wish I could agree with you, but in the case of islam, I can't. A "religion" that preaches hate to the point of inspiring violence in it's practioners, preaches establishing itself as the rule of law for the world, and seeks to convert people through passive aggressive tactics or death....taint a religion.

islam isn't a religion, in all it;s forms it is a mental disorder. The Aussies are simply discussing treatment protocols.

The Howard government seem to have a very schrewd and sophisticated idea here IMHO - worth copying in other countries. I see their thinking for insisting on English going something like this:
1) It almost prohibits visiting psycho ragheads from spewing their anti-West bile in Arabic, as they don't speak anything other than the prophet's derka-derka language.
2) It allows ongoing cheap accountability as anyone (media included) would be able to sit in, listen and record EXACTLY what these guys are preaching instead of them putting out spin that their code was "misinterpreted".
3) It allows the more "normal" home grown non-Arabic speaking muzzies to attend these things. Maybe they can get the uptight radicals laid - problem solved.

Yes, and they seem to act like they love their country.

How refreshing to see in the Media.

Remember when WE did not have to be ashamed of it?

Do you have a problem with the government telling criminals where to reside?

Islam is the new religion of Jim Jones. The Muslims are drinking the kool-aid and killing themselves only they are taking hundreds of victims with them. Would you not have the Government stop Jim Jones?
