Frank Melton, mayor of Jackson, Miss., indicted!
Jackson Free Press ^ | 9/15/06 | Jackson Free Press

Posted on 09/15/2006 1:24:18 PM PDT by struggle

Sources are telling the Jackson Free Press that Mayor Frank Melton has been indicted on at least one felony charge by a special grand jury this morning. Sheriff Malcolm McMillin and District Attorney Faye Peterson are expected to announce details at press conferences at 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m.

12:24 p.m.: Mayor Frank Melton, Police Chief Shirlene Anderson and Chief of Staff Marcus Ward just walked into the Hinds County Courthouse.

Yesterday, District Attorney Faye Peterson confirmed that the county's investigation of Melton for the events of Aug. 26 and 27 had been completed and was headed to the next available grand jury. The next official grand jury meets in October, but she told the Jackson Free Press yesterday that it's "always possible" that a grand jury could meet sooner to take up the evidence against Melton.

Update: Sheriff Malcolm McMillin has called a press conference in his office for 12:30 p.m., followed by a press conference by District Attorney Faye Peterson in Judge Tomie Green's courtroom.

Update #2: Update #2: Sheriff McMillan spoke for two minutes before beginning to take questions, telling the assembled media that Mayor Frank Melton was indicted on several felony charges, along with his bodyguards, Jackson Police Department detectives Michael Recio and Marcus Wright, who were indicted on one charge apiece. McMillian didn't specify the charges, but did say that all three men have posted bail and have been released. The D.A. is going to elaborate on the charges in her own press conference momentarily.

The Sheriff was asked about Melton's demeanor, to which he responded, "I could say he wasn't happy."

The Sheriff, responding to a question, told reporters that he thought this was the first public official he'd arrested in his 15 years in office..."Mayor Melton and I have known each other for over 20 years, we've had a work relationship and our friendship goes back 20 years...but the law applies to everybody."

Donna Ladd asked McMillian why this seemed to be happening so quickly.

"Because of the sensitivity of having the chief executive officer of the city of Jackson being accused of these violations...it was in the best interest (of the city) to deal with it now," he said.

McMillian said that while the three men were the only current indictments, the teenagers and other people present with Melton could still be charged. "There is that possibility."

McMillan noted that the list of indictments includes charges that were investigated separately by the Attorney General's office, although he didn't say which those were.

When asked by a reporter if these charges suggested that Melton's crimefighting techniques were outside the boundaries of acceptable law enforcement, he replied: "I think the grand jury made that decision when he was indicted."

Frank Melton, originally thought to be the tough-talking crime fighter of Jackson, has bit off more than he could chew. There was also a rumor recently that he and a group of "former" gangsters busted down a house Katrina-stlye with sledgehammers and without a search warrent. Bye bye Frank, thanks for doing nothing and getting indicted in ONE YEAR.

Hmmmm, I don't recall seeing any mention of his party affiliation.

When that happens, it is usually a DemocRAT, being shielded by the press.

About 5 yrs ago I was going through Jackson to Starkville to go deer hunting. Thanks to Othifer Smith I got a speeding ticket of 59 in a 55. Never seen mirrored glasses used at night.

According to Wikipedia, Frank Melton was first appointed to a state office by Democrat Governor Ronnie Musgrove. He was fired by Governor Haley Barbour, and then ran for mayor of Jackson.

I'd say that makes him a Democrat.

He is a democrat but this time the local lib rag
has been his worst enemy.
He had a lot of "meant good" as far as crime goes
but went about it in all the wrongs ways.
Having teenagers destroy an occupied dwelling
which he says was a drug house is what pushed
him over the line.
It is really a shame that he went down this way
but he brought it all on himself.

I'd say that makes him a Democrat.

I'd say he's a Democrat only if the mayor in Jackson is a partisan position. After all, many Dems appoint Republicans (Clinton appointed Cohen as Defense Secretary) and many Republicans appoint Democrats (GWB appointed Tony Sanchez to the UT Board).

We conservatives had great hopes that Melton would clean up Jackson. The criminals there are out of control. Melton's biggest sin is that he got caught up in his image as a crime fighter. He's an honorable and honest man at heart.

Bit off more than he can chew is an excellent observation.

From what I've heard from WKB and other friends in the area, Melton was the best thing that had happened to Jackson in a long, long time. Unfortunately he made his share of enemies during his short mayoral term, too.

Chances are you won't.
Jackson is now 71% minority.

Yeah, and the two dems waiting in the wings to replace Melton are pretty lame.

But he have them an excellent target.
Even Charles Evers told him to sit down and shut up.
Evers' first suggestion to Melton: 'Shut up'
