Los Angeles -- Democratic gubernatorial candidate Phil Angelides on Thursday maintained his campaign did nothing wrong when it downloaded an audio tape of a private meeting from the governor's Web site.
Instead, the state treasurer sought to steer the debate away from the legal or ethical questions of obtaining the file and focus attention on Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's comments. The governor was overheard on the tapes, during a private meeting with staff members last March, remarking about the fiery temperament that results from the mixing of "black blood" and "Latino blood."
"As I understand it, this audiotape was downloaded from a public Web site. That's very clear," Angelides said in response to reporters' questions after an education-themed campaign event in Los Angeles.
"What's at issue here are the governor's comments his deeply offensive comments," Angelides said. "We deserve better."

Contact Patty Dunn at H-P and ask her how that strategy worked out.
Looks like Phill got caught with his hand in the cookie jar.
So when Republicans find something on a government server its bad, but not bad when the Democrat campaign staff (searching for dirt) releases something to the press, maybe it's not so bad...
Ex-GOP aide [Miranda, who exposed Dem strategy to block W's judicial picks]: Dems derailed hiring (March 9, 2005 | Charlie Savage)
WASHINGTON--A former top Republican Senate staff member who resigned under pressure last year for spying on his Democratic staff colleagues is now accusing them of threatening partners at a law firm that was considering hiring him--including the firm's chairman, a prominent Boston attorney--in order to scuttle his job offer. In an affidavit he submitted to federal prosecutors this week, Manuel Miranda, a former aide to Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, said that Democratic staffers on the Senate Judiciary Committee telephoned partners at the firm of McDermott Will & Emory in January and asked them to not hire him.
Miranda alleged that staff of Senator Edward M. Kennedy, Democrat of Massachusetts, were among those who called the partners, including the firm's chairman, Boston-based Harvey Freishtat.
Another McDermott partner, Stanton Anderson, allegedly told Miranda that Democrats threatened to slow down major pieces of legislation in which they had an interest if Miranda were hired.
In February 2004 Miranda resigned as Frist's judicial nominations adviser, amid furor over the disclosure that he and a lower-ranking GOP staffer had infiltrated Democratic Judiciary Committee staff computer files for more than a year, monitoring their confidential plans in fights over judicial nominations. He has maintained he broke no law.
CA AG Bill Lockyer is threatening prosecutions over Dunn's snooping at HP, but I doubt anything will come (criminally; perhaps politically) of AngelidesGate, even though Lockyer can't stand Red Phil.
The Angel-istas should have stuck to the tactic they were using two days ago (paraphrasing here): "We're unhappy to learn that a staffer downloaded this ... BUT it wasn't illegal, and can we move on, now?" Yet now, Red Phil himself is out there saying the REAL issue is allegedly racist Arnold. They're trying to make Arnold out to be the Austrian Al "Big Thighs" Campanis. Amazing.
I hope Arnold's team is preparing a nice hit-piece-ad showcasing this Watergatery.

Well make no mistake, Lockyer does not want Angelides to win (he wants an open race in 2010, not a Democrat incumbent blocking him from running), so he may initiate an investigation.
Did you say Angel Eyes?
