Bush: "Texas has lost one of its great daughters"

WASHINGTON President Bush has paid tribute today to Ann Richards, whom he ousted and succeeded as governor in 1995.

The former Democratic governor of Texas died last night at her Austin home after a battle against esophageal cancer. She was 73.

In a statement issued by the White House, the president said he and first lady Laura Bush "are deeply saddened by the passing of Governor Ann Richards of Texas."

He said Richards "loved Texas, and Texans loved her," and that "as a public servant she earned respect and admiration."

The president said Richards "became a national role model, and her charm, wit and candor brought a refreshing vitality to public life."

He concluded that "Texas has lost one of its great daughters."

I agree, Ann Richards did have enough class and wit, for example, to admit George W. Bush beat her fair and square, and that makes her more of a man, so to speak, than John Kerry or Al Gore will ever be. She was a leftist but not the sort of conspiracy-driven moonbat Molly Ivins wanted her to be.

That George W. Bush shows civility and graciousness to his political enemies OUTSIDE the realm of politics shows his graciousness and constitutes strength both as a pragmatic matter and one of principle.

On the other hand, that the President sometimes compromises with them too readily WITHIN the realm of politics, that within that realm he refuses to attack them has often been a weakness for him, since "the new tone" is something his critics are too set in their ways to ever appreciate--- just my opinion.

The words we speak say more about the speaker than the ones they are spoken for.

I can't wait to say nice things about Ted Kennedy at his funeral. Same goes for Kerry and Hillary. I'll be sweet as cherry pie!

Well, I wasn't personally acquainted with her. The "silver spoon" remark probably helped Clinton get elected, but surely she meant well . . . {{{hummm.mmm}} OK, well, her hair was always in place. There now. Sorry to hear of her death.

Ann Richards was so ugly toward George W. Bush when he ran for Governor in Texas and again when he ran for the presidency. I won't say anything ugly about this woman and will try and follow the president's excellent example so I will leave the thread.

There is one thing you could say. 'Bless her 'lil heart'. Southerners here will know just what you mean.

I don't wish to say anything about her but I will simply note that President Bush and First Lady Laura Bush are infinitely more decent and gracious than most of the Demagogues who attack them so nastily.......

"Bush's statement is much nicer than she deserved and much nicer than her comment would be if the situation was reversed."

SO true. And when she was so publicly hateful to his family, too.
What can you say, that is just how DUmmies are...

I heard Ann on Larry King 2004 rerun last night. She was still so sure that the President had done such a bad job that Kerry was a shoo in.

I think that if the funeral is held in the South, it won't be "wellstoned". People in the South have more manners and class than people up north.

Like Coretta Scott King?

It's not a northern thing, it's a crazed leftist thing.

Once agaain, Bush demonstrates his class, dignity and respect for others. Queen Ann went out of her way to find ways to belittle Bush, and he responds with grace.

The Democrats are probably planning another Paul Wellstone memorial for her sendoff - proving, yet agin, that they are the ones who just don't "get it".

I bet when Bill Clinton dies the most respectful and decent comments will come not from dems but from W and HW.

Ann's daughter is the local president of Planned Parenthood and I wish she would quit that job. After you experience a tragedy, you are supposed to do some soul searching.
