Bush: "Texas has lost one of its great daughters"

WASHINGTON President Bush has paid tribute today to Ann Richards, whom he ousted and succeeded as governor in 1995.

The former Democratic governor of Texas died last night at her Austin home after a battle against esophageal cancer. She was 73.

In a statement issued by the White House, the president said he and first lady Laura Bush "are deeply saddened by the passing of Governor Ann Richards of Texas."

He said Richards "loved Texas, and Texans loved her," and that "as a public servant she earned respect and admiration."

The president said Richards "became a national role model, and her charm, wit and candor brought a refreshing vitality to public life."

He concluded that "Texas has lost one of its great daughters."

I still wonder if Bush's main weaknesses is being to nice to those who want to destroy him.

He'd be OK if he just restricted it to those who are already dead. We don't need anymore popcorn movie nights at the White House with teddy kennedy.

George H.W. Bush had a lovely handcrafted silver pin of a silver foot made for Gov. Richards. She wore it often and he said they always laughed about it. Though I would not have voted for her, there was not a mean or malicious bone in her body. She loved Texas as much as we loved her.

I see you are like me, I don't forget those ugly words but, not being a Democrat, I can forgive.
As for as heaven is concerned at death, if I were a Democrat I would consider what the party stands for, abortions, lying, hatred for my fellow man, school prayer and, on and, on the list goes.

What has dead got to do with her death, if you are a bitch
while alive and, you die, you are a dead bi*ch.
Ann Richards was a political hack and will be remembered for that by many.

I couldn't stand to hear Richards make a speech. She had that tone in her voice that sounded like she was talking down to you. She reminded me of Hillery.

George H.W. and his son, George W. are very gracious and forgiving men.

You said, in part: I still wonder if Bush's main weaknesses is being to nice to those who want to destroy him.

President Bush is looking to history. Cheap (even if true) shots at Ann Reynolds and stupid Democrat comments gain little if anything in the short term, and offer fuel for historians to attack Bush down the line. He is denying them that, just as he did when Clinton's portrait was dedicated, for example. One can argue that President Bush is not assertive enough, but ultimately he gets most of what he wants. If anyone doubts that, just look at the reactions of democrats to him. If he were totally ineffective do you think the dems would care about him?

Not unlike my feelings for Liberals. However, I think hate is the wrong word. Disdain is more correct.

There was not a mean or malicious bone in her body...

I wonder how you can say this?

She is well known for the caustic tone....sarcastic, even malicious tone...she used on George Bush, the dad...

She is known as a thorough Democrat...

..her legacy in parenting has given us the new president of Planned Parenthood, her daughter!

Not a malicious or mean bone in her body....

...I cannot agree with you at all.

It's one thing to not say negative things about someone who died, but he has given the Clintons, Kennedys, and Richards more respect and kindness than they deserve, and it's let them continue to get away with trashing him and his agenda.

I never found Ann to be caustic at all. George H.W. said he never understood how some did not "get it" considering how funny her comment about the silver foot was. There was nothing to forgive. Mrs.Richards was a gracious lady, a wonderful mother and a devout Christian. And she raised four wonderful children.

Mrs.Richards was a gracious lady, a wonderful mother and a devout Christian. And she raised four wonderful children....

May I ask, what part of 'devout Christian' lady raises a 'wonderful' daughter to become the president of Planned Parenthood?

Do you understand what Planned Parenthood does?.....they are an organization that totally and wholly kills babies....by the millions.

Mrs.Richards....(who divorced her husband of the four children by the way) belonged to the political party that supports & endorses this organization.....

She not only belonged to this political party, she embraced it lock, stock and barrel.

What is your answer to this?

My answer is..she was a devout Christian who raised four beautiful children. Governor Perry asked that all flags be flown at half mast in her memory..as they were..and all churches were to toll their bells at noon today. I was lucky enough to be downtown San Antonio at noon..to hear San Fernando Cathedral start first..and all other downtown churches joined in. It was a beautiful tribute.

Of course Governor Perry would have flags fown at half staff....she was a former governor.

But your definition of 'devout Christian' and my definition of 'devout Christian' are worlds apart.

You obviously consider yourself a friend of hers....my condolences.

I remember you from a different thread...and you defended the Dixie Chicks.

I do notice you never answered my question about Planned Parenthood or if you understand what that organization is about.....however, I suspect you do.

I also suspect you knew Ann Richards well, and probably the Dixie Chicks too....

Whether you're naive or something else, I don't know.....

..but ma'am I do wish you to have a dose of reality someday......some things in life are an illusion.

I do not think either of us are naive. Yes. I am well aware of Planned Parenthood. I was not avoiding the question. You and I simply disagree. It does not make either of us naive. And reality is something I well acquainted with. I appreciate your thoughtful reply.
