Houston PING

I almost hit someone who was running across 59 on evening (and he zigzagged back and forth even) but there was no accident and he ran off.

I fail to see how 5 drivers could hit someone (who was at fault for being on the highway, 59 is ELEVATED at that point) and NOT stop.

"didn't know what was happening" is being very generous. This town sickens me.

This happens all the time. The rule seems to be that the traffic must flow no matter what. They get into 100 car pileups and incidents such as this, but the basic rule is that traffic has a higher order of being than any individual can dream of interfering with.

A woman is dead after she was struck by several vehicles while trying to run across Southwest Freeway Wednesday night.

This may sound harsh, but there's a side of me that would be very tempted to keep driving if I were one of these drivers. Someone who runs across a freeway is an accident waiting to happen (and a Darwin Award candidate, too) . . . and yet the way our legal system works these days, any one of these drivers could stand to lose a lot of money in civil lawsuits over an incident in which they bore absolutely no responsibility.

Im with you there.

A couple of years back, I was driving through the Medical Center on my way to a dental appointment and I pulled to a stop at a stop sign at the intersection of the street and a cross walk. I had just started accelerating when a young man on a bike flew out in front of me, and he went flying across the hood of my truck and onto the pavement. I immediately stopped to render aid. I was HORRIFIED by what had happened, and was horrified for the man...and I wasnt going much faster than he was. Fortunately he was not hurt to the extent of needing to go to the hospital, but it was an awful moment for the both of us. Still, how anyone can hit someone and NOT stop is beyond me. If I hit ANYTHING I want to know what it was. I guess youd have to be a pretty cold heart in order to keep driving...

I tend to agree, as hitting just about anything on the road is going to cause some damage. Years ago, my father was driving my grandfather's pickup with all three of us in there. He had just turned the corner, started speeding up (going ~30-35) and this chicken flies out from nowhere. The chicken hit one side of the front and took out the headlight and (plastic) grill and put a small dent in the bumper. I couldn't believe how much damage that thing did to that truck. Yes, easily fixed (junkyards come in handy!), but still.

Driving on our Houston freeways is scary enough. You'd have to be an idiot to try and cross one on foot.

This town sickens me.

Gee, thanks. Blame a whole city for the actions of a few.

>>"this town sickens me">>>>

Ummmmmmmm........ maybe it time you moved instead of blaming the whole town for the actions of a couple of people when you have no idea whether they were aware of what happened or not.

" This town sickens me."

I love Houston, if you live in a city that large, you have to get used to the ever ready availability of weird local stories.

It is an incredibly diverse, and international city with a larger collection of people than several states put together.

I once slammed into a German Shepherd dog on a dark rainy night. I was driving a small car on one of those steeply banked 2-lane roads that are outside the main city of Houston. I was not speeding (indeed traffic was almost a crawl because the heavy rain made it almost impossible to see anything), as it was raining so hard I just wanted to stay on the road. As I'm driving, the German Shepherd appeared in front of me and pulled the "deer in the headlights" routine. I tried to slow down as best I could, but did not want to go down the embankment or hit the cars coming at me in the other lane (which an attempt at a complete stop would have caused), so I braced myself and hit the dog and knocked him down into the ditch by the embankment. Even though I was going quite slow, the car had more torque than the poor dog.

As a dog lover, I was concerned, so I drove around the block to see if I could help (I could hear the dog yelping after I hit him). As I came around, with my window down, I could see and hear people crowding around the dog from the house where the dog was hit. Whether they were the owners or not, I don't know, but I was hearing stuff like "some sumbitch musta hit 'im and kept a'goin!". I decided there was nothing I could do, so I went on my way. Those country types who let their dogs run loose are not to be messed with, IMO.

It still bothers me that I hit that dog, even though there was no way to avoid it without endangering my life or those of other drivers. I can still see the accident and hear him yelp as he ran off in the ditch. How someone could hit a human being and not react at all is amazing.

Who's the moron trying to run across a highway? They are too lazy to walk down to the next overpass and cross there.

The 59 is elevated near hillcroft. And the feeder roads pretty busy itself. Cant understand what the woman was trying to do.
