A woman is dead after she was struck by several vehicles while trying to run across Southwest Freeway Wednesday night.

Police said around 10:25 p.m. Wednesday, a woman attempted to run across four lanes of traffic on the 6800 block of Southwest Freeway near Hillcroft Avenue when she was struck by an unknown vehicle traveling north

The driver of the vehicle did not stop.

Her body was then struck by at least 4 more vehicles and an 18-wheeler. None of the vehicles stopped after striking the woman's body except the driver of the second vehicle.

Police said motorist may not have realized what was happening.

The woman's identity is pending verification.

Oh I agree that she is responsible for her own death (and that area is a banked turn on pillars, so I don't know where she could've been going, even if she'd been hit while walking in the small shoulder).

But I hope that the driver who did the RIGHT thing doesn't suffer as a result.

This happens all the time. The rule seems to be that the traffic must flow no matter what. They get into 100 car pileups and incidents such as this, but the basic rule is that traffic has a higher order of being than any individual can dream of interfering with.

Verification of what???

Knowing that part of the freeway well...I'd be hard pressed to do anything but stay in my vehicle and wait...

And that pretty much goes for any Houston freeways...

Pretty sad though...

Can you imagine the people who didn't stop, yet hit her???

"Whats that on the front and underneath the car Wilma?"

Sickening...

Yeah, I can believe that someone would be stupid enough to risk it. But driving on them is nervewracking enough.

Is that safeclear program still in affect? I thought it was being revamped. I do remember seeing a woman complaining on TV that she couldn't afford insurance for her car, much less the $75 tow..

absolutely... And my guess is the only person with insurance is the one that stopped. The rest had those ambulance chaser lawyer ads flash before their eyes and sped on.

It would be suicide to attempt to cross a Houston freeway.

Maybe it was.

"Houston's highways are some of the most frightening I've been on. Like eight lanes at Indy. Trying to cross one on foot is suicide."

At some points, like near Greenway Plaza, there are so many on and off ramps, I think there might be 16 lanes.

Greenway by the basketball arena?

"To add insult to injury as they say. In 1 in 3 cars does not have insurance and in 1 in 3 cars there is a gun. Cover me I am changing lanes."

Are you suggesting there are shoot outs over fender benders?

I'd think that a licensed 18-wheeler would have to file a "driver safety" report at minimum.

Did he hose down the grill (she was already bloodied) before that next weigh station?

Been a LONG time (15 years) since I heard of shootouts over fenderbenders in Houston but it has been known to happen.

Someone hits someone and then gets out of his car and shoots the other guy (who he hit).

We've lived in Houston for about 18 months. And this is at LEAST the 4th person who has been run over while crossing an interstate. strange..

I can recall several instances of illegal aliens meeting their deaths running across I-5 from San Ysidro, CA north.

It IS Texas...

(Note for people who haven't seen the original, that's how it ends, with one of the girls running down a country highway being chased in the morning sun by Leatherface. She is rescued by a truck driver while Leatherface dances with his chainsaw).

Several years ago, heading out here to the desert from Los Angeles around 10pm, and cruising I-10 at around 80mph, I couldn't avoid a coyote that decided to bolt from the median to the shoulder.

Good dang thing it was running low-slung; I hit it dead-on, heard the thump-thump-thump as it rumbled the length of the undercarriage and was thankful I hadn't gotten it during a leap, or it would have gone through the windshield.

Next morning I got down and saw all this greyish fur underneath.

More than anything else, I'd say this is why people should not speed in the city.

Wouldn't be their "fault" if anything happened but it would weigh on their conscience, could possibly be avoided, and could lead to a greater accident.

There are stupid people in our city who are doing wrong things. And you have to be able to react.

If I'd hit the guy who was crossing the highway, he would've gone through my windshield, and then who knows what would've happened.

I hear that armadillos "leap" up and get hit (and maybe that's why they are often found dead at the side of the road (bumped) instead of crushed in the middle of the highway.

A woman is dead after she was struck by several vehicles while trying to run across Southwest Freeway Wednesday night.

This may sound harsh, but there's a side of me that would be very tempted to keep driving if I were one of these drivers. Someone who runs across a freeway is an accident waiting to happen (and a Darwin Award candidate, too) . . . and yet the way our legal system works these days, any one of these drivers could stand to lose a lot of money in civil lawsuits over an incident in which they bore absolutely no responsibility.
