The "Brady Campaign" is trying hard to derail or ruin H.R. 5005, the “FIREARMS CORRECTIONS AND IMPROVEMENTS ACT” !
It would be interesting to know who the 35 Police Chiefs are who aren't willing to admit to the public that they're against the bill.
I was initially skeptical that the the Nevada Sheriff's and Chief's Association was supporting the "Brady" bunch on this, so I PERSONALLY confirmed it.

This association is made up of L.E. "Professionals", many of whom have to run for election soon.
Maybe we can convince them to stop opposing even this small effort to clean up the "gun control" laws of this country?
Their claimed "concerns" mostly relate to their losing access to records they never should have had in the first place, and HCI/Brady/Bloomberg losing access to the sort of "Trace" records they routinely misinterpret to support their bogus reports and lawsuits!
This is the same bunch who oppose every effort at Nevada getting interstate reciprocity for CCW, so please keep this information on hand for next years legislative session.
LAW ENFORCEMENT OPPOSITION TO H. R. 5005 “FIREARMS CORRECTIONS AND IMPROVEMENTS ACT”
July 5, 2006 The United States Congress Washington, D. C.
The undersigned law enforcement organizations/associations and law enforcement executives represent law enforcement officers who are actively engaged in providing law enforcement, public safety and homeland security.
We are writing in strong opposition to H.R. 5005, the “Firearms Corrections and Improvements Act.”
While this legislation purports to make “technical” corrections, it proposes significant changes that would undermine Federal firearms law and endanger public safety.
At a time when communities across the nation are struggling to find solutions to gun violence, this legislation goes in the wrong direction and should be rejected.
One of the most disturbing provisions in the legislation for our members is a prohibition that would prevent local police from receiving reports on multiple sales of handguns.
It is important that local law enforcement know whether gun traffickers are purchasing large numbers of guns from local gun shops.
Indeed, according to a 2002 ATF report, Following the Gun: Enforcing Federal Laws Against Firearm Traffickers, “most ATF trafficking investigations, 68 percent …, involved the cooperation of State and local law enforcement agencies.”
It makes no sense for Congress to prevent state and local law enforcement from being notified of, and acting on, inherently suspicious multiple sales.
H.R. 5005 would unduly restrict the disclosure of information in the firearms trace database maintained by the National Trace Center of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF).
This provision was inserted into the fiscal year 2006 appropriations bill funding the Department of Justice.
Instead of codifying this harmful provision in a criminal statute, it should be stripped from any future appropriations language.
This provision would prohibit disclosure of information collected pursuant to Title 18, Section 923(g) “to any entity, except to a Federal, State, local or foreign law enforcement agency of a Federal, State, or local prosecutor solely in connection with and for use in a bona fide criminal investigation or prosecution, and only to the extent that the information pertains to the geographic jurisdiction of the law enforcement agency or prosecutor requesting the disclosure.”
We believe strongly that this provision, if passed, will have long lasting and chilling adverse effects on the use of crime gun trace data; may impede criminal investigations and the prosecution of individuals involved in criminal activity that crosses jurisdictional lines; and could have adverse consequences for law enforcement operations and officer safety.
With a number of reckless and irresponsible provisions that would weaken federal gun laws, H.R. 5005 would move our nation in the wrong direction. As state and local public safety officials on the front line of the battle against gun violence, we urge Congress to reject this legislation and, instead, work with us to strengthen federal gun laws, and provide more resources and tools to protect public safety.

I'm more qualified than you to have a gun because i have a badge. Of course I can't follow you around all day to actually protect you and you can't be trusted to protect yourself so if you do end up getting rolled or murdered I'll be there as soon as the coast is clear to clean up the mess and maybe find the person who did itand you get the privilege to pay my salary while try and undermine your Constitutionally-protected right to keep and bear arms.

How could they come up with that conclusion?
H.R. 5005 is a modest bill to clean up some language from earlier legislation so that it makes more sense.
Clarity is a GOOD thing when dealing with fed. law, as being unclear too often leads to good people being prosecuted for their confusion.
It also puts a halt to some sections that are currently subject to constant reinterpretation (I.E., barrel import ban), stops the anti's access to records that are supposed to be confidential, clarifies earlier legislative intent, etc.
Everything I read in it was either positive for our RKBA, or neutral.
Most high ranking LEO's are there for political reasons, and are usually Democrats. Also, Las Vegas holds most of NV's popluation and there is a massive influx of illegals into the state, so it is growing more blue year after year.
One wonders if the police chiefs, and all officer of the government for that matter, would mind having their bank records monitored, just in case there is something "suspicious". ;-)
My only comment is to wonder if these people ever heard of the second amendment? Oh, ofcourse not.. Then the police could not be the all powerful thugs that they are! I guarantee you that the biggest, worst "gang" in any city in America is.... the police dept.!!!
I was being srcastic. I'm not an LEO but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Select last night.
