The attack was a Syrian operation? I heard Daniel Pipes on Glenn Beck's show suggest the same thing the other night.
I just thought I would let you know...that I scanned by the now bankrupt AirAmerika for a minute this afternoon...and Ed Schultz had James Webb on as a guest..
I didn't listen to what he had to say...but, his son, a Lt. Col. in the Marines, just got orders to go to Iraq...(uhoh)..

Pakistan Expert Discusses Powerful Al Qaeda-Taliban Network in Waziristan

One of the premier experts in Washington on Pakistan, Alexis Debat of the Nixon Center and ABC News, traveled again to Pakistan last month and gave a briefing yesterday to invitees. Alexis is a daily CTB reader, and we've traded valuable background information and timely intelligence. He met there with numerous government officials and non-governmental personnel, including those in league with the terrorists. His findings and conclusions are extremely troubling, not only for the future of Pakistan but also for the future of a democracy in Afghanistan. It's difficult for me to imagine either country's continuing to serve as an ally with us against Islamic terrorism given the near-permanent Al Qaeda-based network in the Pak western provinces, especially after the recent "peace agreement" between the militants and the Musharraf government. Alexis provided two charts of the Al Qaeda support network, linked below. I invite your comments and counterpoints, and please consider, as Alexis pointed out yesterday, the questionable reliability of some of the information he received (a daily risk in this business). Here are some of his main points which he invited me to post:
œ Al Qaeda is not just an ideology or label in Pakistan, but a live organization with deep roots in Pakistani civil society. They've reorganized brilliantly in Waziristan with financial assistance and personnel from outside the country.
œ Osama Bin Laden doesn't move often and is well protected. Ayman al-Zawahiri is assumed to operate within a 40 square kilometer area between Kunar in Afghanistan and Bajaur in Pakistan, is personally involved in all operations, and is therefore more vulnerable. OBL and Zawahiri communicate often through couriers, which takes up to 8 weeks and is vulnerable to Pakistani intelligence and law enforcement (top operative al-Libi was caught there thanks to the capture of an Al Qaeda courier). Matiur Rehman, whose leadership role in Al Qaeda was announced in a report by Alexis for ABC News, has been involved in every major Al Qaeda plot in Pakistan since the 9/11 attacks. (My note: Alexis is not convinced that the Pakistanis have him in custody, and ABC News report of Rehman's capture on August 17 was not based on his reporting.)
œ The Al Qaeda support groups in Pakistan and Kashmir (Word files) provide protection, muscle, and logistical support.
Protection: The clerics in Waziristan have overtaken the tribal leaders in authority by acquiring more guns and money, and Al-Zawahiri is protected by the tribes and clerics and married into the local tribe. Muscle: The clerics recruit from the thousands of madrassas in Pakistan. Alexis heard of considerable sexual abuse in the madrassas, which is then exploited in the recruitment phase. The Musharraf government has made an effort to register the madrassas, but with no impact thus far on the recruitment dynamics. The local Taliban provide sanctuary to Al Qaeda, and other groups have come together in the past year as indicated in the charts. The "peace agreement" protects the local Taliban there, and the stipulation in that agreement that the Taliban turn over foreigners cannot and will not be enforced. Logistics: Al Qaeda now has links to numerous institutions and political parties in Pakistan, assiduously built over the past two years, which have been exploited to assist Al Qaeda and the local Taliban. Alexis believes that some of those parties are not inherently anti-American might be amenable to discussions with the U.S.. Alexis had no information on the extent of foreign financial support for Al Qaeda in Waziristan or the primary country of origin of the outside funds.
œ Musharraf is weaker than ever. He is slowly losing the military, his best ally, as indicated in the killing of Baluch tribal leader Nawab Akbar Bugti on August 26, which Alexis believes was done without Musharraf's orders. Other elites in Pakistan, including lower levels of the ISI (Pakistani intel) are also turning against him and the U.S., for a variety of reasons (more detailed than needed for this post). This also raises concerns over the control of Pakistani nuclear weapons. The timing of the recent North Waziristan "peace agreement" was probably purposeful and further highlights Musharraf's weakness.
œ 50 Pakistani militants recently left for Somalia, with more on the way.

Syria on the offensive again

I agree with my colleague Walid Phares on the likely implication of Syria in the latest attack against our embassy in Damascus. It sounds very plausible.
Assad like his father is famous for playing the arsonist/fireman strategy. For instance when Western citizens were kidnapped by Hezbollah in the 80's on the orders of Damascus and Tehran, Syria would pretend to help Western nations free their citizens. Nobody was really fooled but everybody played along and thanked the Syrians for their help.
Also, back in April 2004 there was an attack against a UN office in Damascus that our own State Dept deemed most likely done by Syrian authorities.
Syria is hosting lots of terrorist organizations and the Secret police is really watching the country quite extensively.
There's no way really for Al Qaida to stage such an attack which actually does not at all have the hallmarks of AQ.
The timing of this "attack" is not coincidental. Assad is on the offensive: the recent attempted murder of one of the top Lebanese investigators of the Hariri murder, Lt-Col Samir Chehade is one example of this. In particular since the UN Brammertz report is soon going to be released. Indeed Assad is behind the assasination of the ex Lebanese PM. On Saturday, the main witness in the Hariri case an ex Colonel from Syrian Intelligence, Mohamed Al Sadiq declared to Al Arabiya TV network that " Bashar Al Assad and Emile Lahoud gave the order to murder Hariri". He added that the rigged car used in the attack was prepared in a Zabadini camp, near Damascus and that he took pictures of it and gave them to ex UN investigator Mehlis.
Also the recent fast degradation of the situation on the Lebanese political scene does not bode well for a calm future. Indeed Hezbollah has been verbally attacking politicians of the March 14 movement (opposed to Syria) in the past few days. Just today Nasrallah speaking in an interview on Al-Jazeera television has heaped scorn on the Lebanese premier for receiving British Prime Minister Tony Blair, saying the move was aimed at provoking and humiliating his Shiite militant group.
Also yesterday an Hezbollah MP, Ali Ammar, violently attacked the March 14 forces: "The March 14 forces have from the beginning aligned themselves with the Israeli enemy. They have planned the murder of the Resistance in conjuction with the Americans and the Israelis."
In response Druze leader Walid Jumblatt declared that " the attempted murder on Chehade is just the beginning of the excution of the threats of the destruction of Lebanon." He added that Assad's recent speech on the "betrayal" of the March 14 forces was a true call to murder. Incidentally, lots of Lebanese ministers and political leaders have been told to stay put and watch their backs carefully because of credible death threats.
Unfortunately once again one can expect a campaign of violence orchestrated by Syria and most likely executed by Hezbollah to hit Lebanon. All this in the midst of rumors of a civil war or a Hezbollah coup d'etat to seize power.
