(AP) -- Moderate Republican Sen. Lincoln Chafee of Rhode Island, who has bucked President Bush on tax cuts and the war in Iraq, defeated a conservative challenger Tuesday in a contest that could be crucial in the larger fight for control of Congress.
With 72 percent of precincts reporting, Chafee had 25,728 votes, or 55 percent, to Cranston Mayor Steve Laffey's 20,750 votes, or 45 percent.
As pre-election polls predicted, New York Democratic Sen. Hillary Clinton garnered 83 percent of the vote to sweep aside anti-war challenger Jonathan Tasini. She will face former Yonkers Mayor John Spencer in November.
In New York's Democratic gubernatorial primary, Attorney General Eliot Spitzer easily defeated Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi. He is heavily favored in the general election against the GOP nominee, former legislative leader John Faso.
The last big day of primaries before the November elections also brought intriguing Democratic contests for Senate in Maryland and a House seat in Minnesota. In all, nine states and the District of Columbia voted, with the other states including Arizona, Delaware, New Hampshire, Vermont and Wisconsin.
In Rhode Island, Chafee won support from the Republican establishment, even though he has consistently bucked the Bush administration and the GOP-led Congress on the environment and abortion, and was the lone Republican to vote against the use of military force in Iraq.

Chaffee is soooooo toasted in November...he will NEVER win!!! Hope he gets beat. Hope he peed his pants tonite.
An establishment that's becoming increasingly RINO.
That may not be possible in RI.Each state sets it's own rules regarding who can and cannot vote in a primary.Don't know what the rules are in RI.
Most may not like this but Chaffee is probably the best we can do in a state so heavily RAT as Rhode Island.
Only people who switched from the Dems to Independent in RI could vote in the primary, I'm from RI, strange turn of events...
I seen this RINO in the Bolton hearings, the lights appeared to be on, but no one was home..
Oh come on. Laffee or whatever his name is came out from the voting booth and criticized both Pres Bush and Karl Rove. What did he expect?
From what I've read, the rules are remarkably liberal (surprise! Surprise!).
People were swapping back and forth all over the place!
Independants can vote in the Repub primary. No Dems.
DAMN !!!!
So I guess the headline would be "Anti-war candidate loses in a landslide"?
Expect before or after the GOP establishment and the White House knifed him?
Listen I don't care what his feelings were about Pres Bush. He lost because he came out and criticized Pres Bush and Karl Rove from the voting booth.
None of us will live long enough to see a headline like that!
The choice is Chaffee or a democrat. Not a bad choice when the elder was still living.
Then again, many of my hopes haven't come to pass in the last few years.
That's the way it is in Massachusetts.I think it's also the way it is in RI,but am uncertain. Also,be aware of the fact that a huge percentage of voters in New England are registered as "Independent".I guess it's just another way we express our "individuality"'
It's not like there are any Republicans to vote for up there anyway.
