Five years ago, Al-Qaida hijackers destroyed the World Trade Center in a horrifying cloud of ash and smoke. The events of Sept. 11 galvanized Americans across all political and economic divides. "United We Stand" was emblazoned on gas station marquees, and flags flew in every neighborhood. It's natural that intervening events -- like the invasion of Iraq and the war on terror -- should disrupt this solidarity and generate strong differences of opinion.
Yet today the debate has moved far beyond reasonable exchange. According to a recent poll by the Scripps Survey Research Center, 16 percent of Americans -- roughly 48 million -- now think it "very likely" that the U.S. government itself either assisted in the attacks or allowed them to happen as a pretext for war in the Middle East.
Who's responsible for this? One major player is Prof. James Fetzer, who was McKnight University professor of philosophy at the University of Minnesota Duluth until he retired in June.
Fetzer is the founder of Scholars for 9/11 Truth -- a group of academics and hangers-on who are busy compiling evidence of what they call a massive, secret government 9/11 plot. In recent months, they have moved from the Internet's back alleys to the mainstream media.
Fetzer insists that he has "overwhelming scientific proof" that the Bush administration perpetrated the 9/11 attacks. "The Bush administration is totally politically and morally corrupt," he told me last week.
Here's a sample of Fetzer's claims:
George W. Bush's agents blew up the World Trade Center with "secretly planted explosives." The planes that hit the buildings provided terrorist cover, and were "probably operated by remote control" by Bush henchmen, says Fetzer.
But didn't Osama bin Laden admit responsibility on videotape? Bin Laden's first videotape, made shortly after 9/11, was authentic, says Fetzer.

I'm confused. The Bush administration had 8 months to hatch a plot to fly four jetliners into the WTC, Pentagon and the WH, supported by hundreds of people who had to keep silent. For what purpose?
Wouldn't it have been easier to hide a tractor trailer of WMD in the Iraqi desert?
Bumps the article to the top of the latest posts list.
Questions are meant to be asked. :^)
Since lefties blame President Bush for "the poisoned political atmosphere", I guess these nutty theories must be...BUSH'S FAULT!
This guy is so far out there I bet even he doesn't believe this crap.
My theory is that he's riding the hard-core leftists on this all the way to the bank.
Japan dropped firecrackers on little replica boats in an unused Japanese harbor area, they didn't really drop bombs on Pearl Harbor.
Cool. Any Minnesota "kolidge grajewite" that I ever come up against is meat...
I wondered about that myself. Of all the planes this nutjob could have picked for his theory, he uses an obsolete design that spent the last couple decades serving mostly as a refueling tanker?!?
This guy has been drinking some SERIOUS "Magic Kool-aid"!

The left are out of their minds. They claim Bush is a big dunce, but they accuse his administration of hatching a scheme like this? Oh wait, President Bush is still a dunce ... it was Cheney and Rove who were the masterminds of the whole thing. The President is just a puppet. Can't you follow the logic? LOL
Conspiracy theories are not new. A sizeable percentage of the American people don't believe that we ever landed on the moon. The Kennedy assassination, Roosevelt's alleged foreknowledge of the Pearl Harbor attack, etc. say more about human nature than politics.
