Poisoned political atmosphere fuels conspiracy theories
Minneapolis Star Tribune ^ | September 12, 2006 | Katherine Kersten

Five years ago, Al-Qaida hijackers destroyed the World Trade Center in a horrifying cloud of ash and smoke. The events of Sept. 11 galvanized Americans across all political and economic divides. "United We Stand" was emblazoned on gas station marquees, and flags flew in every neighborhood. It's natural that intervening events -- like the invasion of Iraq and the war on terror -- should disrupt this solidarity and generate strong differences of opinion.

Yet today the debate has moved far beyond reasonable exchange. According to a recent poll by the Scripps Survey Research Center, 16 percent of Americans -- roughly 48 million -- now think it "very likely" that the U.S. government itself either assisted in the attacks or allowed them to happen as a pretext for war in the Middle East.

Who's responsible for this? One major player is Prof. James Fetzer, who was McKnight University professor of philosophy at the University of Minnesota Duluth until he retired in June.

Fetzer is the founder of Scholars for 9/11 Truth -- a group of academics and hangers-on who are busy compiling evidence of what they call a massive, secret government 9/11 plot. In recent months, they have moved from the Internet's back alleys to the mainstream media.

Fetzer insists that he has "overwhelming scientific proof" that the Bush administration perpetrated the 9/11 attacks. "The Bush administration is totally politically and morally corrupt," he told me last week.

Here's a sample of Fetzer's claims:

George W. Bush's agents blew up the World Trade Center with "secretly planted explosives." The planes that hit the buildings provided terrorist cover, and were "probably operated by remote control" by Bush henchmen, says Fetzer.

But didn't Osama bin Laden admit responsibility on videotape? Bin Laden's first videotape, made shortly after 9/11, was authentic, says Fetzer.

Isn't this the pinko paper in Minneapolis?

They must be really off the deep end if they are getting slammed in this paper.

"But didn't Osama bin Laden admit responsibility on videotape?"

I guess the author missed the DNC talking points -- OBL doesn't exist. He was created by the Bush administration.

American citizens should arm themselves to prepare.

With what? The guns the Lefties don't want anyone but the government to have?

Yes, those would be the ones. The terrorists can be reasoned with, if we only took the time to understand them, so be armed, but not with guns. Be armed with understanding and compassion.

Only in the groves of academe.

How about the Pentagon? "Hit by a missile from an A-3 Skywarrior, most likely," says Fester. The motive? Defense officials had "lost track of $2.3 trillion," and a team investigating the lost money was "wiped out by that attack."

And United Flight 93? It was probably obliterated by Sidewinder missiles, according to Fetzer. Bush agents likely "faked" the supposed frantic cell phone calls from passengers "by using voice synthesizers," he explains.

Fetzer taught "critical thinking, logic and scientific reasoning courses"-- his words -- to Minnesota college students for decades.

Yah. And my English II college teacher used his course to do nothing but force anti-Vietnam War propaganda down our throats. This has been going on for decades.

Professors, as a group, are bad enough. Philosophy professors are near-universally insane.

The only thing this guy is missing is Karl Rove using alien technology to reduce gas prices ahead of the November election.

Wow, we're still around $2.60 in MA.

What is your state tax rate? We're at 0.21/gal last time I checked.
