I used to have the same thing happen with parts and tools when a two year old would offer to help me work on a VW. When I wasn't looking, things got thrown all over the back yard.
This needs a LIVE THREAD to go with the half dozen other parts lost threads.
My wife is Boeing Software Systems engineering manager (for ISS last year and shuttle this year).
It was funny when last year they were running studies to determine risks when all crew members (2?) were doing an EVA last mission (from ISS i believe), with nobody incside.
It was pretty nervewracking to think that while they were both out on EVA some problem could arise that could strand them out there (I told her they need a remot door opener like on a car, like a smartass. BTW do the ISS headlights flash off and on and horn beep when they lock the doors??)
She had to make sure that any software failure, power failure condition could not arise that would leave them in trouble.
'
What an absolutely incredibly vulnerable feeling that must be for both of them to be out on EVA and nobody else inside??
wow. I'm just now seeing a replay of the eva. Spectacular video of Joe T at end of some structure with earth spinning by underneath him.
Aren't they tethered?? I didnt see a tether but it was at some distance.
I've worked quite a bit at the NBL. We finished up most of the development work for ISS truss elements several years ago, plus I'm now the engineering lead for the team, so I haven't run a test at the NBL in a while. But, the P3/P4EVA Development Test was mine.
Joe T. is also the Youth group leader for my sons (Scott and David) at UBC. A great role model for them. Its amazing how much time he has for them, and has them over to his home quite often.
Joe T. is a phenominally talented astronaut and a great human being to boot.
Aren't they tethered?? I didnt see a tether but it was at some distance.
Yeah, they're tethered. Look for the peanut shaped Tether Reel which should be floating a few feet from the crewmember attched by a hard strap to the one of the D-rings in the waistband.
LOL! Plink! Man that washer is hot! Must have fallen off the manifold.
Yes, be sure to contact: parts.r.us@nasa.gov
Jerry Ross holds the record for lost EVA hardware. The EVA crew has coined the term for losing a piece of hardware as having "Rossed" it.
Too true, they'd only lost half of the station!
I used to be a helicopter mechanic and I was always having extra little bits of parts, gaskets and stuff left over. I'd just look around to see if anyone was watching and toss them over the fence.
justkidding.
So, a zillion things go right with this shuttle launch so far, and the headline writer decides to pick out the one bolt that one courageous astronaut dropped.
I think this is a perfect example of the currently prevailing negative media spin on just about everything.
I'd like to see a survey of how many good stories are preceded by negative headlines. I'm thinking that the headline should reflect the major theme of the story, not the one item that is negative.
Heaven forbid, one of our media types ever forgot to dot an "i" or cross a "t".
Most of our media hasn't got any sense at all.
"Don't worry, all choppers leak. Start worrying when they stop!"
I thought "Astronauts lose parts" was suggestive enough. :-)
"That does it. It's just not safe anymore. Pull the plug and bring the astronauts back home. We shouldn't even be out there.
Put the money into social projects like the ones that helped New Orleans for so many years. Alternatively we could invest in aids research and third world dictatorships.
< /ninny >"
INVEST IT IN AMTRAK!
Are you kidding me? He was probably the guy who screwed up. :)
I am not sure they stock Astronaut Parts.
You can fix anything with enough baling wire.
I hope they brought an extra 1/2" socket (3/8 drive)
I ALWAYS lose those things. They are hiding with the pack of lone socks.
Not Tim, no way!
