Voters Head to Polls in 9 States, D.C. for Primary Elections (LIVE THREAD)

Notoriously independent-minded Rhode Island Republican Sen. Lincoln Chafee confronts stiff opposition Tuesday in his bid for a second term, the latest race with a moderate targeted by his own party's hard-line critics.

While a total of nine states and Washington, D.C., were holding primary elections, Chafee's race is drawing the most attention as another test of the depth of anti-incumbent sentiment and the erosion of the political middle ground.

Update courtesy of RobFromGa in #70:

Here are websites where you can find the results for eight of the nine primaries being held today.  The link for Vermont may not be working just yet.  I believe it should be up and running by this evening.

Is there any way we could move this back up in the Breaking News sidebar?

We don't have the ability to do that anymore

Hey sitetest,

How is name recognition for White compared to Applebaum in your area?

Thanks, guess I should have started the thread later. Oh, well, as long as we keep it bumped.

Well I know you can elect a person to the left of Clinton as a Republican, I'm just not sure that a state can elect a Conservative.

Just a reminder of how Rhode Island votes in a general election:

President
2004: Kerry 59, Bush 39
2000: Gore 61, Bush 32
1996: Clinton 60, Dole 27

Dear red meat conservative,

Poor. I voted for him because it appeared to me that he was running on the slate with Mr. Steele.

Just went downstairs to replenish my coffee.

Carl Cameron will be on FOX -- Hannicty and Colmes -- at the top of the hour to report election results.

Molly Henneenberg sp? reported that the most interest was in Rhode Island and Maryland.

The GOP has gained, however. Interesting statistics! Thanks.

That's what I've noticed. I initially supported Laffey, but this is not his year or race. And while Chafee has an appalling record, Democratic control of the U.S. Senate is even more appalling.

Dear red meat conservative,

"Did the redistricting benefit you?"

I don't know.

As for my district, 33A, the Republican incumbent is one Tony McConkey. Running along side him for the second seat in the district is some character named Greg Kline.

Anyway, on Friday, I got a flier from these two denouncing a third Republican candidate, James King. Very, very ugly.

I was going to vote for Mr. McConkey, as incumbent Republicans have the greatest chance of winning the general election, and his buddy, Mr. Kline, as well.

But after their putrid attack, I decided to bullet vote for Mr. King.

It's not that I don't support Laffey, I just find it hard to get excited about it. Democrats celebrate moral victories. One way to look at it is that he won't be taking a Republican seat on any committees, and we can put a real Republican in his place, even with one less "Republican" Senate seat. That is a plus.

It was an AP story. You will have to ask FoxNews why they ran it that way this morning. I was only the messenger.

Here are the committees that would no longer have Chafee on them if Laffey wins:

Committee on Environment and Public Works
Committee on Foreign Relations
Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs

I don't know, it would be pretty lousy for the GOP to waste their only chance in a lifetime to take district 3 by wasting the nomination on a pro abortion, gay marriage, open borders RINO who donated money to the DNC!

I have come to the conclusion that Laffey's campaign was a mistake. It's one that I reached very reluctantly, given Chafee's lack of gravitas (to put it mildly). But the stakes are too high to chance any Democratic pick-up where it can be avoided.

I realize many Freepers will disagree with that, and they have every right to.
