Voters Head to Polls in 9 States, D.C. for Primary Elections (LIVE THREAD)

Notoriously independent-minded Rhode Island Republican Sen. Lincoln Chafee confronts stiff opposition Tuesday in his bid for a second term, the latest race with a moderate targeted by his own party's hard-line critics.

While a total of nine states and Washington, D.C., were holding primary elections, Chafee's race is drawing the most attention as another test of the depth of anti-incumbent sentiment and the erosion of the political middle ground.

Update courtesy of RobFromGa in #70:

Here are websites where you can find the results for eight of the nine primaries being held today.  The link for Vermont may not be working just yet.  I believe it should be up and running by this evening.

So, do you still think these voting problems are going to hurt Cardin (assuming he wins) in the general against Steele?

I must admit to being conflicted about the fact that a Chafee loss in the primary could mean that we lose the Senate, however I believe Laffey can win in November. Not for nuthin' but if Chafee looked to his left he probably wouldn't see Sheldon Whitehouse.

Vermont is closed, no way to find results, none of the tv stations have them, and the SOS isn't reporting...

Dear RobFromGa,

Yes, I think it's possible.

I noticed that Prince George's County didn't get an extension for voting tonight. Yet, I read of problems throughout the county. This is a county of 800,000 or more folks, nearly 65% black. A third of the black vote in the entire state.

These folks may just wonder why problems in whiter, richer Montgomery County got an extension, but the same problem in blacker, poorer Prince George's County didn't.

We'll have to see Mr. Mfume's reaction to it all. And Mr. Cardin's, as well.

I dunno what's on Chafee's left, except Democrats. But if he looked to his right, he'd see 85% if the GOP.

I forgot to mention that I myself voted with no problem in Anne Arundel County. Although I am curious to know why I was directed to a voting station located in a corner all the way across the room from the others.

That won't happen, if it was 50-50 he'd pull a Jeffords for sure. So, your conscience is clear on that issue. Why do you believe that Laffey can win in November?

Dear Clintonfatigued,

Maryland's polls should have closed 10 minutes ago, but the incompetence of local elections officials means that our two largest jurisdictions, Baltimore City and Montgomery County, won't close until 9 pm.

Dear ForOurFuture,

I had no problem voting in Anne Arundel County, either.

I did have, however, a good time razzing the Democrat election judge about the lack of requirement to produce some sort of ID to vote.

Summary Box: Human error causes problems at polling places
Tuesday September 12, 2006
ERRORS CAUSE DELAYS: Human error at polling places in Baltimore city and Montgomery County caused a number of polling places to open late.

THE PROBLEMS: In Baltimore, some judges failed to show up on time and others had trouble getting inside facilities. In Montgomery County, election officials failed to deliver computer cards to activate electronic voting machines.

WHAT'S BEING DONE: In Baltimore, a Circuit Court judge ordered the polls to remain open an extra hour, until 9 p.m., after the Maryland Democratic Party sued. In Montgomery County, the county board of elections was granted a petition in Circuit Court to extend voting hours to 9 p.m., also adding an hour.

When I hit the polling place at about 5:30, and said I was a Republican, the Demodogs all rolled their eyes, and one said "another one"... I gather there is extremely low Demodog turnout, at least in Central NY, and much, much higher Republican turnout. This could get very, very interesting.

That's a good sign, as Baltimore City is where Kweisi Mfume has most of his strength (with Prince George County the rest). As for Montgomery County, that's where Josh Rales is supposed to be the strongest.

I don't think that Mfume can win a statewide general election in Maryland.

Dear Salvation,

"Good for you! We should all do that!"

I don't know! I thought I was going to get a fat lip! LOL!

The Republican election judge started out by reassuring that no one else could vote in my name after I'd voted. I pointed out that they had no idea whether or not I was really who I said I was.

She started to agree with me, saying, yeah, we oughta ask for ID. The Democrat judge just kept saying louder and faster, "No, no worry. Not concern. You no worry. No need ID." He was an Asian guy with poor English.

* chuckle *

I was in a hurry, or I'd have harassed him even longer.
