Ohio woman reported missing from Carnival cruise ship

MIAMI – Authorities were investigating the disappearance of an Ohio woman who was reported missing Monday from a Carnival Cruise Lines ship.

The 37-year-old woman, whose identity was not released, had been on a four-day cruise to Key West and Mexico.

The Miami-based cruise line said relatives last saw the woman Saturday night, but did not report her missing until Monday, when the ship returned to Miami. FBI spokeswoman Judy Orihuela said, however, that she was not aware of any delay in reporting the disappearance. “It doesn't look like foul play,” said Orihuela, whose agency is investigating the case.

The disappearance from the Carnival cruise ship Imagination was the latest missing person case involving a cruise this year.

Elizabeth Galeana, 22, of Naples, Fla., apparently fell off a cruise ship in July and drowned. Her body was found off the coast of Italy last month. In May, Daniel DiPiero, 21, of Canfield, Ohio, fell off a cruise ship to the Bahamas after a night of heavy drinking with friends.

The International Council of Cruise Lines, an industry lobbying group, reported earlier this year that a review of data from 15 lines showed 24 reports of missing people between 2003 to 2005.

One of the highest profile cases involving a cruise ship disappearance occurred last summer, when George Allen Smith IV, 26, of Greenwich, Conn., vanished from his honeymoon cruise in the Mediterranean after an apparent late night of drinking. Bloodstains were found on a canopy that covers lifeboats. No one has been charged and no body has been found.

Still, you'd think she'd have had and used her cell phone

Question for those who actually do this cruise stuff.

Do those ships have cell phone service? Do they hook into a mainland cell network by satellite?

Do cell phones work on cruise ships in the middle of the Gulf? Mine seems to have a range of about 3 miles.

Great, something new for Greta van Susteren to beat on wall-to-wall for the next 8 weeks.

Not so fast. If she is white and is good looking, yes. But is she is nonwhite, or fat, or has bad hair, it is a no go.

I've never actually been on one, but I hear there's a lot of eating, drinking, and sex (B.Y.O.P. and otherwise).

The ports of call are just little diversions in between bouts of the above.

You left out "third world crew." I remember being in Hamilton BDA when a cruise ship landed and the crew went ashore. It was right out of an SNL skit.

More like 1 1/2 days.

For persons over eighteen in many places, they are not even considered a missing person until they are missing at least 48 hrs.

Depending on the ship and port, I would add shows, lectures, games, diving, horse back riding, the usual shore excursions, sub wall dives, etc. etc. There are many many activities.

The largest I have been on was only a 110 or 120 ton, no ice rink or 9 hole putt putt course.. lots of entertainment, and other activities tho

I like the onboard spa/solariums , wide walking decks and lots of jacuzzis available with bar service. :-)

I'll never understand why people waste money on cruises when there are so many REAL vacations and destinations to enjoy.

Ever been on one?

I was thinking the same thing. At week five, she'll be down to discussing DNA and body fluids.

Yes, many of the crew are from undeveloped countries. While I'm sure,as in any population, there ar some bad actors, I have never come across any on the 4 cruises we've taken. If you put yourself in unsafe circumstances, you may have something unfortunate happen to you.

I took my first cruise last month, and enjoyed it a great deal. I call Copenhagen, Visby, Tallin, St. Petersburg, and Stockholm destinations, don't you?

Ha! I agree with you. Never had the desire to go on a cruise; I'd rather go to someplace, i.e. a destination.

Are you still a virgin?

Ours had numerous shore excursions; we spent whole days exploring the cities we visited. In St. Petersburg there was a full day at the Hermitage, and an evening of opera at the Yusupov Palace, among other things. Might not specifically be your sort of thing, but there are definitely things to "do"; you don't just stay on the ship the whole time, unless you want to.

When you've got thousands of partying drunks on a ship, it's no suprise that somebody falls off once in a while.

Of course you have witnessed this behavior with your own eyes.
