Kinky tackles allegations of racism

AUSTIN — Days after being criticized for derogatory comments about Hurricane Katrina evacuees, independent gubernatorial hopeful Kinky Friedman struck back at candidates who pander to minorities.

"I don't eat tamales in the barrio, I don't eat fried chicken in the ghetto, I don't eat bagels with the Jews for breakfast," said Friedman, who is Jewish. "That to me is true racism."

The comment last week was intended to reflect that he's not afraid of risking a little unpopularity for the sake of being honest, campaign spokeswoman Laura Stromberg said Monday.

"He's not going to become the politician that people in a certain part of Texas would like to see," she said. "He's not going to avoid the topic of gay marriage in Midland and he's not going to not discuss immigration policy in the Valley."

Earlier in the week, Friedman said a spike in Houston's crime rate was partially due to the "crackheads and thugs" who evacuated New Orleans.

Both comments came during news conferences in which Friedman promised help for police departments struggling with "Katrina crime" in Houston, and possibly Austin and San Antonio.

Friedman said as governor he'd provide $100 million to hire 1,000 new Houston officers to deal with the problem. His comments drew harsh words from community organizers in Houston, who said very few evacuees have been involved in crime.

Friedman said there were "some good people among the evacuees, honest folk who lost everything and are trying, hoping to improve their lives."

After the hurricane struck the Gulf Coast last August, an estimated 150,000 evacuees landed in Houston, including 1,000 convicted criminals. An estimated 25,000 residents of New Orleans and other Gulf Coast cities were evacuated to San Antonio, including 1,700 convicted criminals who had been on parole or probation in Louisiana. About 10,000 evacuees remain in San Antonio.

Houston police have reported that 59 of the 262 Houston murders between Jan. 1 and Aug. 26 involved Katrina evacuees, either as victims or suspects.

San Antonio Mayor Phil Hardberger and Police Chief William McManus have both said they see no link between crime patterns here and the new arrivals.

His comments drew harsh words from community organizers in Houston, who said very few evacuees have been involved in crime.

Never mind the police department crunched the numbers and put the stats out themselves that the increase in crime was directly related to those Katrina evacuees.

So, I'm still waiting to see how Texas FReepers are going to vote. Perry or the candidate previously known (for about a week) as Grandma, or Kinky?

Kinky learns a hard lesson: Being a comedian doesn't give you a free ride in politics.

Good for Kinky. It is long overdue. We have been browbeaten for decades, and all politicians pretend to be oh so much the champions of everyone, including the lawless. It is time to offend people in our society who don't conform with it. We don't need to support people who can support themselves, and we don't owe a damn thing to people who want to kill us.

2,700 convicted criminals responsible for very little crime.

Kinky is his show biz handle, and it has served him well. He is a pretty funny guy, and certainly plain spoken.

Kinky is a fool and will not get elected. Those that are in support of him need to take a long look at what a laughing stock he would make of our state, if elected.

Perry has my vote! And I don't even like him or aggies.

Daughter: "Um, dad?"
Father: "Yes, dear?"
Father: "Dad, remember when you promised that when I'm sixteen, I can start dating?"
Father: "Well, yes Cupcake, I remember, but..."
Daughter: "Well, Dad, I've met this really nice guy and he want's to take me out this Saturday."
Father: What's his name...?"
Daughter [blushing]: "Kinky..."
