CNN: NORAD Diverting UAL Flight to Dallas
CNN | 9.11.06

Posted on 09/11/2006 6:31:51 AM PDT by mhking

CNN is reporting that a UAL ATL-SFO flight is being diverted to Dallas after finding an unclaimed (unattached?) backpack prior to takeoff from Atlanta, as well as a Blackberry that does not belong to anyone on board.

The flight is presently over southern Oklahoma, and is being diverted to Dallas.

Could be nothing, but given the day today, better to err on the side of caution...

Their resources would be better spent on a day we do not expect imo, and that would outweigh any PR of a repeat on the same same.

Something like a truck bomb in a mid-size city would be much more doable than a dramatic 9/11-type attack. One has to wonder whether they will wait to try to top themselves, which would be difficult, or go for the easier targets. I do believe their mindset focuses on specific dates as significant. The 5th anniversary of 9/11 would be one of those days.

I can picture my very elderly, non-technical m-in-law sitting in front of CNN now wondering, "so now even fruit is illegal on a plane?"

What most likely happened is someone accidentally left their items onboard when they disembarked from the previous flight.

One or more flight attendants should get the axe for this. No excuse...

If this was a bomb we wouldnt be hearing about a plane being diverted, rather we would hear of a plane crashing imo.

Agree, 100%

Has anyone already posted about the Yemeni man in Detroit who tried to board with a one-way ticket and a knife concealed in a book yesterday? I didn't find a thread. Here's the link: http://www.freepress.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060910/NEWS05/609100687/1007

Someone is frantically looking for their back pack and blackberry, cursing the theif that took it.

If he left ID on either, he'll be getting a visit very soon, and not just to say "Here's your stuff, have a nice day!"

Airport security is really ridiculous! I get my lip gloss confiscated, and on board, during the flight, a lady has a bottle of Coke fall out of her purse and roll down the aisle.

I'm pretty sure that if I had my lipgloss in my pocket, I could have gotten through security.

Huge holes, I'm telling you.

Good points. I guess we wont know until this day is over.

Hopefully if they have a plan it is busted by homeland security.

I am absolutely appalled that this is not covered at all by the MSM. A Yemeni man getting on a plane with a one way ticket and a concealed knife the day before the 5th anniversary of 9/11? Good grief. If that isn't news I don't know what is. Thanks for posting. I hadn't seen this story.

These carry-ons have always irked me. They should cease carry-ons and only let passengers on the plane with maybe a book to read and make them check everything else in the hold. Never mind how much more secure it would make us, but just the fact that planes would load and unload so much quicker would make this policy worth it.

I never understood the insistence of some passengers to attempt to lug everything on the plane with them and then stash it in the overheads. They really aren't saving that much time. Whenever I land, I grab a quick beer at the airport bar and by the time I get to the baggage carousel, my bag is just sitting there waiting for me. No stress, no worries. And at the most, I lose maybe 10-15 minutes.

Last week on a flight out of MIA, the lady in the seat next to me pulled a bottle of water out of her purse shortly after the flight began.
